Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Kibler.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I’m a rocker and have played in local (KC) bands for years, mostly hard rock or punk. I’ve always been fascinated by the aesthetic of fashion intertwined with the art of music and how it’s not just emotional but visual in the total experience. Getting to how I started designing my stage clothing was, in a nutshell, out of necessity. I wanted to look cool on a shoestring budget. Any musician can attest that we’re not exactly wealthy doing what we love. Lol So in 2020, I got into a band that played and traveled a lot and decided I needed to find a fix because I could afford some cool duds. Being crafty anyway, I decided to try designing a few outfits out of some clothing I was already wearing. I posted some of my creations on my SM pages, and some friends who were in music, toured, or knew something about fashion told me I should try to sell stuff like that, as they thought my stuff was pretty cool. Being an entrepreneur anyway with my real job, I did some research, listened to their ideas, and proceeded to give it a go. I opened a shop on Etsy to start in February of 2022 and sold 30 pieces throughout 2022. (Punk jackets and leather wristbands) my stuff got some excellent reviews there, and things picked up here in 2023. In 3 months, I’ve sold 23 jackets across the United States and got my first international order to go to the United Kingdom. And that’s where I’m now, balancing work (remodeling), playing in a semi-touring rock band, and making punk/rock clothing as my side hustle.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
So far, my only struggle has been trying to get my website as the main source of sales. Since I have a remodeling company and the clothing isn’t self-sustaining, I’m usually up into the early morning stitching, trying to get multiple orders out on time. Sometimes I’ll get 3 or 4 jackets purchased within a couple of days of each other. I pre-make some of the jacket elements, so I must attach and stitch them. Oh yes, and plenty of sleep.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Boomers are Punk too?
I specialize in denim and faux leather Punk and rock jackets. I have some jeans I’ve customized as well. I’m proud that people who buy my creations are satisfied with what they’re getting, even excited. My reviews speak for themselves. What I hope will set me apart is that people can enjoy killer clothing at a price point that won’t break the bank. I try to approach this with the attitude that if it were me, how was my experience with who I purchased from? Was I completely happy or not? Were they (me) helpful in answering my questions/concerns about my purchase/process etc?
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I don’t know. My approach to life is I don’t have anything to lose, so why not try it? If it doesn’t happen, I’ll try something else.
