Meet Justin and Amelia Long of Success on the Spectrum – Lee’s Summit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin and Amelia Long.

Hi Justin and Amelia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Our youngest son was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at age 3. We began the hard task of finding all the services recommended to him from the diagnosis. One of the top recommendations was ABA or Applied Behavior Analysis Therapy. When we began the search, no clinics were in Lee’s Summit area. Most were in the surrounding regions making it hard to provide the services to our son that he needed. After struggling to get the services he needed, we decided that we would provide services not only to him but to as many as possible in our same situation. We opened Success on the Spectrum – Lee’s Summit in April 2022 with a parent lead mindset and have hired all our staff with that same mission. We expanded beyond the original walls of our clinic from a year ago and are in the process of expanding the building that we are in and will have additional rooms in May 2023. We want to put parents’ goals for their children before all other mainstream ideas that are said to be normal.

Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect.
This road has not been smooth but has been rewarding in ways. We have always struggled to ensure that we have the best staff for our clients and provide the best services to the community we are a part of. Today all small businesses need help finding staff, but when you add on the level of being the best, it demands a lot from us and the staff. With that said, we can be rewarded in so many ways by watching our clients learn and grow in ways that most think are impossible but we see as just another step towards them being more independent and successful.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Success on the Spectrum – Lee’s Summit?
We are an Applied Behavior Analysis clinic for children with an Autism diagnosis. The age of clients that we see is from early diagnosis to the age of 18. Our clinic is run and operated by parents of a child with Autism with an emphasis on providing quality therapy that is parent-led. The goals the parents want for their child, not just what all the assessments and society say, should be the goals. We also focus on our staff, from training to team building. We want our staff to be the most knowledgeable in the field. We always strive to make meaningful changes for our clients.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
No, as we are a medical facility and still operate.
