Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Powell. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Austin served as an analyst in the U.S. Army, holding various technical and managerial positions. After nearly a decade of honorable service, Austin left the military to pursue his dreams as a professional artist. Through the Department of Defense’s internship program (Skill Bridge), Austin interned at Full Magazine Publishing where he served as a digital artist and illustrator. During the internship he became the first Skill Bridge participant in history to have their work published in an American Legion magazine. After the internship, Austin was offered to work directly with The American Legion to help create their graphic novel.
In December of 2022, Austin was admitted to the Ringling College of Art and Design and will attend as a student of the Game Art curriculum from 2023-2027. His long-term goal is to become an artist in the game or film industry. In his spare time, Austin owns and operates Austin Powell Art, a small art business designed to meet clients’ creative needs. His services range widely from wood burning to digital logos or even hand-painted art.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Learning the necessary items to run a business was my primary challenge. I’ve always known I could make money from creating art, but I needed to figure out where to begin collecting money legally. I wanted to start my business in 2020, but there was too much I needed to know, so I left the idea behind until 3 years later.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m creative at heart, so I’m open to any medium. I have a range of services from woodworking, engraving, custom digital paintings, designs, illustrations, etc. I’ll even be going to school for 3D art. I’m most proud of my newly-found painterly style. I’ve been studying the basics/fundamentals for so many years that only until recently had my style started to show through. It’s a good feeling when that happens. My speed in creating an art piece sets me apart from others. My process is fairly streamlined – I’m able to create a finished painting from start to finish in about a day.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
When I decided to leave the military, I participated in the Department of Defense’s “Skill Bridge” program, which is essentially an unpaid internship during the final 6 months you’re in the military. I interned for Full Magazine Publishing, which started as a graphic novel company but is now quickly expanding. August, the owner, had me work on a few projects for The American Legion. He guided me in terms of art direction and timelines to meet. After a few months I was getting the hang of things. Following the internship I was offered a contract position by The American Legion. All of this to say that I owe August for the help and guidance he provided. We still work on projects together from time to time.
