Inspiring Conversations with Julia Johnson of The Journey Home

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Johnson.

Hi Julia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas (yes, of course, I have a “Dotte Original” t-shirt if you know, you know, #IYKYK) in a blue-collar household where I learned countless impactful life lessons. When I reflect on “who I am,” I always vividly remember my first college graduation, where the keynote speaker asked all graduates to stand up and then asked the group questions. If your answer was “yes,” you were to remain standing. You could hear a pin drop in that auditorium when the final question was, “are you the first person in your family to obtain a college degree?” Only two of us were left standing. I saw my Mom across the auditorium with tears streaming down her cheeks. I earned that degree on an academic scholarship that paid 100% of my books and tuition while working full-time nights at a local hospital. Now a nurse practitioner, Mom, and wedding venue owner, I am overwhelmed with gratitude (and drink a lot of coffee.).

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Are there people who have overcome more adversity than me? Absolutely. Are there people who have overcome much less adversity than me? Also yes. “Smooth” is subjective, and that’s part of what makes life beautiful–all the different stories and backgrounds that shape people along the way. I won’t go too far in-depth about my “struggles,” but I will say I learned very early on that we always have a choice to see the good and to find gratitude. There is always a silver lining. Struggles teach you grit, forcing you to be creative and adapt instead of folding. Once you have that figured out, you become unstoppable.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Journey Home?
This Majestic 5.84 acre 1800s colonial farm estate is anchored by a beautiful 6 bedroom 3.5 bath 5000 sq. ft. main residence with large main floor and second-floor gathering rooms, incredible wood floors, library, formal dining, 2 gas fireplaces, and screened porch. The property also features a 4000 sq. ft. tobacco barn accented with natural wood beams, stained concrete floors, a catering prep kitchen, 3 indoor bathrooms, patio heaters, infrared heat, rafter fans, manicured ground, and a covered patio that can be enclosed, frequently used for celebrating weddings or other large events with up to 225 guests. Known by many as The Journey Home, available on Airbnb and Vrbo, this one-of-a-kind property sleeps 23 guests and is located just 20 minutes north of the Kansas City airport.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
My friends and family have always said that I am tough to out-work. Life has taught me you won’t always be the best in the room, nor the smartest, or most qualified–but remaining determined will get you to the front of the pack.
