Inspiring Conversations with Brad and Jenna Batchelder of Batchelder Family Farms

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brad and Jenna Batchelder. They share their story of starting Batchelder Family Farms.

The Batchelder Family has raised cattle in the Kansas City area for nearly 100 years, starting with dairy farming and eventually transitioning to beef cattle in the 1980s in Drexel, Missouri, with Brad’s parents, Roger and Kay Batchelder. We bought our land in 2015, hoping to continue the tradition of cattle farming near Belton, MO. Our idea was more direct-to-consumer beef sales, where people could buy sides and individual cuts. We liked the idea of people being able to come out to our farm to see how their food was raised, as it has always been important to us to know where our food comes from.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When we bought our land to start our farm, there was no water, electricity, or fencing on the property. We slowly added these things and eventually built a barn with living quarters that we lived in for six years until we built our house. No one who owns a farm will tell you things go smoothly! There is always something that needs to be fixed and something that needs to be done. We’ve been through droughts, below zero temps, and the rainy season, ensuring our animals are safe and cared for daily. Farm living can be challenging, but it’s worth it.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We started direct-to-consumer beef sales through Batchelder Family Farms in 2015. We are known for our Angus Beef, pasture-raised without steroids or growth hormones. Our farm sells 1/4, 1/2, and whole sides of beef.  We also offer individual cuts as well as smaller bundle packages for those who don’t want to purchase a full side. We are most proud of growing our business through hard work and producing a quality product available for people interested in purchasing from local farms. We will be starting a “Meat and Greet” this summer, where people can buy meat from our store on the property and come see our animals. By offering this option, people can see how their food is raised and all of the other animals we care for.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Along with our “regular jobs” and farm, we raise four kids ages eight to two years. Our children put in a lot of work raising their animals and learning about responsibility. Between our children and our animals, it’s never dull out here!
