Splitlog Coffee Company’s mission is to make extraordinary coffee experiences convenient. Splitlog Coffee is located in a particularly unique neighborhood community called Strawberry Hill. This spot has proven to merge the gap between the downtown, KCMO city life, and the slower-paced, small-town feel of the Strawberry Hill Neighborhood. With ample parking, seating inside and outside, a warm, hospitable atmosphere, and friendly staff, not to mention a drive-thru, your morning coffee couldn’t be more pleasant or efficient than at Splitlog.
BACKGROUND:
Started in early 2017, Splitlog Coffee was founded by two brothers, Adam and Caleb Wittmer, wanting to expand Kansas City’s exceptional coffee scene to the Kansas side of the state line. Deciding to take the venture on themselves, they brought on longtime coffee professional Simeon Bricker to help craft a coffee experience for both the coffee enthusiast and the daily drinker. After a short build, the shop opened its doors in April 2017. Fast forward to 2023, with Cafe Manager Dwane Jones leading the way, Splitlog remains a thriving, innovative cafe focusing on consistency and creativity. With a small staff size, Splitlog’s baristas have a strong teamwork presence and appreciation for each other that sets them apart from other shops in the city. The challenge of a fast-paced drive-thru in the morning rush hours provides a daily dichotomy of speed versus quality, and the staff at Splitlog works hard to ensure the product served is the best it can be. In the summer of 2022, Splitlog began crafting all of their syrups in-house by the baristas. Through this, and the coffee beans roasted weekly at the annex next door, Splitlog’s coffee beverages have a unique quality characterized by their hands-on approach, from bean to pour. The kitchen has quickly become a highlight of the shop. Offering fresh breakfast sandwiches, burritos, and oatmeal bowls, Splitlog sells hot breakfasts from 7 AM to 1 PM; filling out the food options, pastries are provided daily by Hana’s Donuts and Sunflour Bakery.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The entire current barista staff has been together since April 2022. Of course, any team of people (small businesses or not) will have challenges to overcome. But time and time again, the staff has rallied together and supported each other so well. They have encouraged, celebrated, said goodbyes, and laughed ’til they’ve cried together for almost a year. For us recently, the winter weather was the culprit of some of those challenges. Closing several hours early for a few days before the holidays could have been better, but even still, the staff found ways to help set the shop up for success.
As you know, we’re big fans of Splitlog Coffee – Roasting. For our readers who might need to become more familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Splitlog Coffee Company proudly roasts its beans. Caleb Bunce is the head roaster at the shop, and he roasts large batches of coffee weekly on Tuesdays. If you ever visit on a Tuesday, you will likely smell a faint aroma of what some say resembles toast. The best way to try Splitlog’s beans is by ordering a drip coffee or a “Hit and Run,” which is a double shot of espresso paired with sparkling water and a drip coffee, served on a tray.
