Today we’d like to introduce you to Janeth Garcia.
Hi Janeth, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was inspired to start Cakes By J as a side job a few months before Covid-19 hit. At first, I thought this was only a temporary side job until I realized that a small idea had more potential than a “side job.” I continued promoting my small business throughout Covid-19 and learned that this was something I saw myself doing for a long time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a first-generation entrepreneur, I found it difficult not to have a mentor to lead me through building a foundation for my business. Throughout my journey, I learned that practice does not create perfection; rather than consistency leads me to perfection due to the time I spent practicing.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with what you do?
My Mexican and American Culture inspires Cakes By J. As a DACA recipient, I look for ways to involve my Latina and American cultures in my cake business. My business is mainly known for its trendy cake designs and unique flavors. I’m proud of offering flavors like “Horchata Tres Leches” cakes. I am not a big fan of the traditional tres leches, so I had to come up with something I enjoyed eating. After combining Horchata and tres leches syrup, I knew I had something different to offer.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
An entrepreneur is about taking risks, working smart, and leaving the “comfort zone.” When it comes to risk-taking, you have two options; you either have a great outcome from the decisions you took from leaving your comfort zone or a bad result. A bad outcome can either teach you to do better or to give up on your journey. Risk-taking is about having the courage to step into the unknown. Many times, I allowed fear to talk me out of stepping out of my comfort zone. Then I learned that fear was just a feeling of the “unknown.” I took a risk and stepped into the unknown; thanks to that, I could go full time on my then side job.
