Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristy Guy.
Hi Cristy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Hello! I’m Cristy, a commercial makeup artist, beauty educator, lipstick lover, and The Official Super Bowl LIV Confetti Launcher! I’ve been freelancing in my business for 18+ years working in commercials, TV, film, and on live events. Oh and I’m also a huge Kansas City Chiefs fan. Many times these two worlds merge and I’ll find myself on a commercial shoot working side-by-side with popular Chiefs football players, other professional athletes, actors, models, celebrities, and everyday people. How did this life happen? Well, it started on a farm in rural Southwest Kansas where I was born. With grit, determination, and a passion for makeup, fashion, and business; it led me to Kansas City by way of Phoenix, Denver & Los Angeles. Upon graduating cum laude from The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles, I made my way back to the Midwest; exactly where I needed to be at that time to be near family. After several odd jobs, I landed a position as a marketing coordinator at HOK Sport (Populous); a sports architecture firm.
A position that played a huge role in where I am today. This is where I learned the art of marketing and catering to clients which are vital to the success of any business! From there I became a visual merchandiser then took a leap of faith and started my commercial makeup, hair, and styling business phone call by phone call, photo shoot by photo shoot building my portfolio. Fast forward to today, my business has taken me across the globe working with major brands on advertising campaigns like Nike, Adidas, Wendy’s, and McDonald’s among many others, with TV networks like ESPN, NFL Network, CNBC, and celebs like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kielce, Wendell Pierce, Corporate Natalie and so many more! An experience of a lifetime presented itself in the 2019-2020 NFL football season when I heard they were giving away a VIP Trip to the Super Bowl! With my makeup skills, an Instagram post, and a Chiefs-winning season, I won and landed myself on the field at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami launching the post-game confetti with a Chiefs win. This experience will forever mark the pinnacle of my career and personal life when I was not only recognized nationally for my makeup skills but also given the privilege of living a dream I never knew I had!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There are moments and spans of time when things are smooth. However, any small business owner knows there are always bumps along the way! Before I started my business, I had a major struggle to work through which was losing my mother at the age of 19. Losing her at that age seemed like a nightmare but I realized I was at a fork in the road. I could either continue following my dreams or who knows; I could curl up in a ball and not move. I chose to follow my dreams and became highly focused on reaching my goals and staying on track. I will not sugarcoat this and say it was easy.
There were lots of personal setbacks and moments of doubt along the way. However, with perseverance, everything came together. Then my father passed away several years later. Again, almost unbelievable and rough but I forged ahead to follow my passions and dreams. They were both very supportive and would have wanted me to reach my potential. So facing these two major struggles, I feel like day-to-day business challenges do not compare except of course when Covid hit! That was challenging for all of us.
We’ve been impressed with On the Set Styling, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business On the Set Styling, LLC includes commercial makeup artistry, and wardrobe styling for advertising, commercials, TV, video, print, and live events. It also includes the educational side of my business where I not only teach aspiring makeup artists and wardrobe stylists how to work in the production and entertainment industries but also teach individuals about makeup and wardrobe that fits into their daily lives.
Natural is my niche and I’m known for creating polished and pulled-together natural looks on actors, models, and individuals. Also, I’m called upon to create very creative looks like special fx makeup, character makeup, and even black light makeup that glows in the dark! In addition to the natural and super creative projects, I work a lot with professional athletes and sportscasters as well on projects from major advertising campaigns to live TV to social media spots.
I would say what sets me apart is not only the depth of makeup artistry, wardrobe styling, and educational services I offer but also that I give each client and job a 110%. I approach each client and job as if it is my only one. I’m easy to work with, personable, and friendly, and put clients, talent and individuals at ease when working with them.
As far as what I’m most proud of brand-wise is my career now spans the globe. 24 states, Hawaii, and 11 international locations to be exact, and to hold the title of The Official Superbowl LIV Confetti Launcher!
And I’m a small-town Kansas girl who has gone from the farm to NFL football fields and beyond taking my makeup and styling skills nationally and internationally working with big-name brands, professional athletes, celebrities, and musicians on advertising campaigns, commercials, on tours, and in TV and film.
Sometimes I really do have to pinch myself knowing I’m trusted by brands like Adidas, Nike Golf, Under Armour, Head & Shoulders, Netflix, Wendy’s, Absolute Vodka, McDonald’s, Magic the Gathering, and PlayStation to bring my A-game to their projects and help successfully convey their marketing messages! The same goes for when I scroll down my client list and it’s full of elite athletes and top-tier celebrities like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, JJ Watt, Paul Casey, Jack Sock, Jon “Bones” Jones, Tate McRae, Ezinma, Eric Stonestreet and Wendell Pierce are just a few to name!
And most of all, I’m proud that 1. all of my passion and effort has paid off as I continue to follow my dreams despite the effort it takes 2. helping other artists reach their goals, and 3. teaching individuals the skills on how to look and feel good about themselves!
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
As a kid, I was extremely shy but with a sense of humor! When I would go to the store with my mother and someone spoke to me, I would hide behind her. I was also creative and could entertain myself with projects for days.
I loved fashion, sewing, riding skateboards, playing Farkle when my grandparents would visit, and traveling on weekends to motocross races as my brother raced. I was also the only girl cousin on my mom’s side of the family so kind of did Tomboy stuff!
