Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Tallman.
Jessica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
With a great-grandfather, grandfather, and two uncles as chiropractors on my mom’s side of the family, I grew up thinking everyone went to the chiropractor when they needed something: stuffy nose, fell off the monkey bars, not sleeping well, can’t poop, headache, etc. It was just part of our lifestyle to try to nourish the body with movement, hydration, quality sleep, and good nutrition. As I grew up and went to college, I was participating in track and field as a thrower. The repetitive motion and heavy lifting started taking their toll on my back, and by the time I was at Conference Championships my junior year, I could barely get up and down out of the car because I was hurting so badly.
My grandfather, a chiropractor of 40+ years (at the time), drove out to Warrensburg, Missouri, and adjusted me before I competed. I felt like a new person was able to win my event and move on to a runner-up finish at DII Nationals in the shot put. It was then I realized that I wanted to be able to take care of my family the way my grandpa was able to take care of me that day. So I switched my focus from a communications degree (which I still obtained) to getting my requirements for Cleveland Chiropractic College. The rest is history! I’ve been in practice for almost 10 years and have a husband and three daughters (and lots of nieces, nephews, and siblings) whom I get to care for, along with an amazing patient community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overall, the road has been mostly smooth to becoming a Doctor of Chiropractic. My biggest bumps were navigating the challenge of being a wife, mom, business owner, and doctor. There have been times when I cried because I felt like I couldn’t be everything to everyone the way I wanted to be. I still have to intentionally work to set my boundaries to do the best I can to protect my most precious priorities.
I was an associate doctor for five and a half years before opening my own practice. While I wouldn’t call it a struggle, it has definitely been a learning curve to create my own brand of practice. We have a focus on the whole person, physically, chemically, and emotionally. Our office is a place where people feel seen, heard, and respected – creating a safe environment for healing. It isn’t the typical model of care, so there isn’t a true template for how to run the ship.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
After being an Associate Doctor of Chiropractic for almost six years, I decided to create my own brand of practice in the Healing Arts. I have always had an affinity for the role that emotional patterns play in our expression of health and how thoughts affect our physical relationship to the world in and around us. So I built a business around acknowledging the WHOLE person, physical, chemical, AND emotional. Thus, Mind and Body Family Wellness was born. We take a holistic approach to help the nervous system adapt by addressing patterns in the body that make it more difficult to be the best version of ourselves.
Because each person is unique, we use a variety of techniques that we can incorporate depending on the preferences and needs of the patient. Although our clinic was founded on Chiropractic care, we also offer massage therapy, Sontre energy healing, and Acupuncture. I am extremely proud that we have created a peaceful and safe environment where the providers are all compassionate and respectful to the individual needs of not only the patients who benefit from our gifts but also uplift each other.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
One quality that has led to the success of this business is the “empowerment factor”. What I mean by “empowerment factor” is that instead of creating an environment of dependence on a provider for permission to improve or help yourself, we encourage YOU to listen to your own body.
We want YOU to develop a relationship of trust with yourself so that you can take your healing into your own hands. Over and over again, we watch people go from feeling like they have no say in how they react to the world around them to finding their voice and standing up for what they want and need. It’s such an incredible movement to be a part of as a provider!
