Daily Inspiration: Meet MJ Schiller

Today we’d like to introduce you to MJ Schiller.

Hi MJ, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstories.
Shortly after my fortieth birthday, I was watching one of those award shows. It was the Emmy, and they were giving a special award to Aaron Spelling. He said something that wasn’t exactly spectacularly creative, but for some reason, it struck me that evening. He said something about following your dreams, and I realized if I was going to “write a book someday,” that day might need to be soon. Once I started writing, I never looked back, and I now have 29 books published. My romance, TAKEN BY STORM, was picked up by Crimson Romance, but eventually, I decided to self-publish it. Most of my books are self-published, although one series remains with ePublishing Works! Self-publishing gives me more creative power over my cover designs and other aspects of the book. It also cuts out the middleman, so I get more of the profits. Writers are supportive of one another. It’s a great community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first started writing, I had a twelve-year-old and ten-year-old triplets, so finding the time to write was my biggest challenge. I would write at basketball practices, the oil change place, the dentist’s office anywhere I could squeeze it in. Now the kids are grown and gone, and I’ve retired from my job of fifteen years working as a lunch lady. This is when I should be able to put out book after book, but somehow it’s harder to find the time now. Like everyone, the biggest struggle is balancing work, home, friends, and family. Also, as a writer, you have to wear many hats. I have to market, create graphics, coordinate covers, upload files, and edit. It can be a lot, but I love it!

Please tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others.
I write romance and romantic suspense. I have two series with rock stars as their main characters, and music is often threaded through my other work. I also have a sci-fi romance series. From books to films, I love the romantic parts. It doesn’t matter if it’s a princess, a construction worker, or a knight roaming about the galaxy, love is love, and all of them have their stories to tell. I love exploring family bonds in my books, and I write dark, angsty scenes and lighter, comedic fare. I want to make you laugh and cry, but I always offer a happy outcome.

What matters most to you? Why?
Faith, family, and friends are all vital to me. Being able to serve others is what it’s all about.
