Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Pretorius and Kayla Mason.
Hi Sarah and Kayla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Sarah: My diverse professional journey has always stemmed from a profound desire to impact the world positively. I spent six years refining my marketing and public relations expertise for for-profit and nonprofit organizations.
SipSteady was born from my personal experience as a non-drinker. On September 5th, 2021, I chose to live an alcohol-free lifestyle. Still a bit of a social butterfly, I quickly realized how alcohol-free brands were underrepresented at restaurants, bars, hotels, and concert venues. Tired of ordering “soda water with lime,” I decided to devote my marketing skills to NA brands looking to grow and reach more eager sober, and mindful drinkers.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As we’re brand new, so far, we’re still riding the wave of excitement with launching and signing our first clients.
We’ve been blown away and humbled by the fantastic response we’ve already received from non-alcoholic brands and the sober/sober-curious so far! I am sure we’ll face our own share of challenges along the way, it’s all a part of the entrepreneurial journey and we’re thrilled to be along for the ride.
As you know, we’re big fans of SipSteady. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Kayla: SipSteady is a hyper-niche marketing, events & public relations consulting agency that helps non-alcoholic brands and sober-friendly businesses get the recognition they deserve. Our goal is to be a one-stop shop for new and small businesses with big dreams but limited resources, be that time, money, or human capital, to reach their marketing-related goals by themselves.
That’s where we come in. We don’t have clients. We have partners because that’s how we want them to think of us as partners who share their vision and commitment to their brand’s growth and success. Part of our vision is to host sober-friendly events all over Kansas City and the country. We’re excited to highlight the beautiful diversity of non-alcoholic culture for drinkers and non-drinkers alike and amplify the sober curious movement. We’re all about inclusion. As much as we want to contribute to the dialog around destigmatizing addiction, we also believe you don’t have to be fully sober to enjoy taking a night, a week, or a month off from drinking. We want to help the brands we work with reach new fans, sober or not, who will fall in love with their products.
We create fully customized plans for our partners that include digital marketing services, event coordination, public relations, and virtual sales.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Saha: Two of the biggest takeaways from the pandemic were: it’s crucial to be passionate about how you’re spending eight-plus hours a day, the collective shift in how many people were prioritizing their mental and emotional health, and the lifestyle choices being born from this shift. SipSteady was founded in 2022, but the idea was planted in 2021 when I (Sarah) decided that alcohol no longer served me or the goals I had for my life.
Kayla: The pandemic taught us resilience and the power of hope, well-being collaboration, and how important it is to build community. These are all ideas and values that fuel SipSteady and what we’re working hard to achieve – greater social inclusion for non-alcoholic brands in the market, as well as for non-drinkers or anyone looking for non-alcoholic alternatives.
