Rising Stars: Meet Berk Jodoin of Folk Alliance International

Today we’d like to introduce you to Berk Jodoin.

Hi Berk, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I have dabbled in music for the better part of 20 years. But in 2014 I came to a crossroads in my life. My health was failing due to alcoholism. I sought professional help and started my life as a recovering alcoholic. In my life of recovery, I found myself very restless and found that writing deep and meaningful released my debut self-titled album in December 2020 and followed it up with my sophomore effort aptly named “Half Breed”.

I am a metis man Part Cree and part European. I have been writing and recording in a fashion that I would consider Folk music. A good majority of my song address culturally sensitive subject matter meant to shed light on issues that indigenous people have been facing for hundreds of years in North America.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been smooth, but it has been rewarding. I am a husband and a father of three beautiful children.

My oldest daughter, Milly, is actually a bass player and performs in my band. But the music industry is a hard industry to exist in if you need to support a family while you pursue your musical goals. I work a 9-5 during the week and in the evenings and weekends, I work my music career all the while not neglecting my duties as a father and husband.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I write, record, and perform songs that are important. They are important due to the subject matter. I am an indigenous person and I write a lot of songs about the trials and tribulations that indigenous people have and continue to face. I am brutally honest with my lyrics and my delivery of the songs.

I am most proud of the fact that my live shows have enabled people to feel the emotions necessary to truly look at themselves and their surroundings and ask themselves how can I make this a better world for everyone. I believe that is also what sets me apart from many of my peers.
