Check Out Brittany Pickens’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Pickens.

Hi Brittany, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have always loved educating children. I never knew how much of a need good teachers were needed to care for the students. I am starting as a substitute in the Kansas City Public Schools and getting to know the students. Right then and there, I wanted to open a tutoring business to help support students in their education journey. High Achievers Tutoring has been in business since 2018 with a growing number of students. My business’s goal is to become a non-profit organization where I can help students get the additional help they need for little to no cost to their families.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road by any means. I have hit many challenges along the way, including finding students and families that need tutors. Opening a business right before a worldwide pandemic was hard. Families began to lose jobs, and homes were being foreclosed. The need dropped drastically as families were not able to afford to tutor.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a teacher in the Independence School District in 5th grade. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and K-12 Mild/Moderate Special Education from Graceland University. I also hold a Masters’s in reading from Northwest Missouri State University. I specialize in students with all learning needs, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, IEP & 504 plans. Something that sets me apart from other companies is that we care. It is never about the money for us. We love supporting students on their educational journey.

What are your plans for the future?
We are looking to expand to a permanent location in the inner city where students can have a haven to come after school to focus on their studies. Our biggest goal is to become a pillar in the Kansas City community, so all students feel like High Achievers is their home too.
