Today we’d like to introduce you to Griffin Hall.
Hi Griffin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started playing bagpipes at age 13 and was initially taught by members of the Kansas City St. Andrews Pipes and Drums. Through performing and competing, I climbed my way up to being one of the better players in the band. I began to compete in solo competitions and was enthralled with winning and bettering myself as a musician. It wasn’t long after this when I was asked to give my very first lessons.
My parents used to drive me to my students’ houses until I took on too many for my own schedule and for theirs. The first batch of students all improved and made their way into the band and several began to compete themselves.
From then on, teaching bagpiping has been my career choice in addition to working for a Scottish clothier and bettering myself as a musician.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe that youth is always faced with adversity, but the road to my success was paved for me by my parents who taught me good morals and showed me how to do better for myself. Hardship is the only thing we’re ever promised and the sooner we come to that realization, the more mature we can prove to be.
Things haven’t always been easy along the way for me, especially as a young musician trying to be better and surpass older seasoned musicians. For a time, you feel like you won’t be taken seriously by other players. Unfortunately, this is only something that time, age, and experience can make better for you.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I compose music for the Great Highland Bagpipes, Irish Tin Whistle, and Piano along with some other instruments that I dabble in. I specialize in world music, film/orchestral music, folk, and ambient music.
My style isn’t something that can be easily found in a typical playlist, but I enjoy listening to various different kinds of music. My simple rule is that it must be a real instrument played by real people.
What matters most to you? Why?
Ambition. I aspire to be the best I can be in every walk of life. Personal betterment is the ultimate key to a life worth living and my ambition is the driving force behind every goal I can ever dream to achieve.
