Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Conway.
Hi Christopher, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My story begins with the love of music. Born into a musical family, as far back as I can remember, my childhood home was filled with the sounds of music – specifically gospel music. I remember listening to the radio or an antique record player blasting in our family room. You can say it was our “alarm clock,” lol. My mother, a talented musician, played various instruments in the Southeast High School Marching Band, Southeast Jazz Band, and Symphonic Band. She also served as the Senior Choir Director and choir member for many years in our home church right in the heart of the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District. My mom supported and helped cultivate our musical talents, instrumentation, and singing in school and church. I want to say she passed on her love and passion for music to my siblings and me.
Although my love for music is strong, it was never my goal to seek a career in the music industry. While venturing out into the world after graduating and exploring a career in a Fortune 500 company, I began singing background for various local groups during my leisure. I had no idea that soon, I would be introduced to some of the most notable and influential artists and musicians in the Kansas City area. Minon Bolton- Sarten singer, songwriter, and featured lead vocalist for gospel greats such as James Fortune, J.J. Hairston & Youthful Praise, and many more, provided my first opportunity to join main stages as a background vocalist. Shortly after, I was introduced to the dynamic sister duo Tobbi and Tommi of gospel royalty Donald Lawrence & Co.
I began singing background for the sister duo, then later transitioned to operating as the administrative assistant and road manager, working closely with their manager at the time. This allowed me to observe and learn much about the music business. I was eventually offered and allowed to manage the group. This is the very moment destiny and purpose found me. My “Why” became a reality! From this new adventure, I met industry guru and now Co-Manager and mentor Nicole Heyward (Founder & CEO) of Creative Classic Agency – a full-service talent and creative company based in Houston, TX. I came on board the agency as an artist manager in 2013.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We can all agree that nothing great ever comes easy without struggle. While we might view struggles as a negative in life, it is mandatory and essential for outgrowth and development. Struggles reveal core values. In the music industry, you are faced with many challenges. Today I’ll focus on patience. As artist managers, we are responsible for managing our client’s/artists career’s. We are committed to producing results and reaching high rewarding goals. Not every goal is accomplished overnight, or every answer yes to a potential opportunity. Yet we remain patient, diligent, and flexible in our plans bearing in mind that we are building a legacy. Stay the course, pace yourself and enjoy the journey. It will all be worth it!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a proud artist manager at Creative Classic Agency (CCA) – a full-service talent and creative company specializing in brand and artist management. At Creative Classic Agency, we are creative game changers, brand architects, relentless believers, and cultural engineers who operate off the mantra. Our roster and clientele consist of multi-award-winning and nominated music artists, musicians, producers, songwriters, authors, and more. As an artist manager, I provide direct support in shaping and building the artist’s careers. My years in the industry bring a wealth of knowledge and experience in artist management, road & tour management, booking management, product management, and artist marketing. One can list many accomplishments to be proud of. As for me, I’m most proud and humbled to make an impact and live out what I love with some of the world’s greatest creatives. It’s a family culture, and we’re doing life together. In this world, we don’t succeed alone. I will always honor and appreciate bridges and mentors like Nicole Heyward in my life. God had a plan for me, and I’m manifesting His plans for my life.
What characteristic of yours would you give the most credit if you had to?
Oh wow, it’s difficult to narrow down to just one. I feel several key qualities and characteristics are non-negotiable and extremely important to my success.
My top in no particular order:
Passion, resilience, integrity, humility, accountability, patience, creativity, confidence, and a commitment to learning, developing, and growing. Good qualities and characteristics we apply daily are key to reaching our goals and success.
