Rising Stars: Meet Diego Galicia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diego Galicia.

Hi Diego, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my career in my first year of college at the University of Missouri. Cinematography and video editing had been something I was passionate about in High School and something I knew I wanted to continue with in the future. With some well-timed emails and luck, I landed a job filming my university’s sports and the Kansas City Chiefs for the NFL. From there, I continued to take on more work and clients in and out of sports. I filmed my hometown team, the Kansas City Chiefs, winning the Super Bowl in Miami to working with Twitter and Bad Bunny, one of my favorite artists of all time.

After college, I took a full-time editing position with the NFL’s Social Department in Los Angeles. It helped me land my current job as a creative for Race Service and Automotive Creative Agency based out of LA, where I help us work and land clients such as Scuderia Ferrari, Mercedes Benz AMG, Aston Martin, and F1.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road was fairly smooth until recently. Before I left my job at the NFL, I had only been in the sports creative world regarding cinematography and video editing. Everyone I knew, followed and took inspiration from was in this small bubble of video creators for social media, mainly within the NFL.

Since landing my new job at Race Service, the world has only gotten bigger. I learned a new world of video editing, shooting, and creativity. I want to say that I knew myself in the sports creative world, but since joining this automotive creative world, I feel like I’m starting from ground zero. The biggest struggles today are taking what I’ve learned from within the creative sports world and using it to become successful within the automotive agency world. Instead of social hype piece, I’m now working on commercials, mini-documentaries, and brand launch videos. It’s a struggle that I’m welcoming because I’m now constantly learning, and it makes life fun.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a cinematography and video editor. I specialize in automotive creative content and previously worked for the National Football League filming and editing social content focused on the Kansas City Chiefs. I’m proud of my leap from the NFL to the agency world. Since the Netflix series, Drive to Survive, I have been obsessed with working with or within F1. Today I’m proud to say that I’ve had to pleasure of working with numerous F1 teams since beginning at Race Service. I believe taking risks and taking inspiration from different avenues of life is what sets me apart from other cinematographers and video editors.

What would you say has been one of your most important lessons?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is to speak up and ask questions. I wouldn’t be where I am today in my career if I hadn’t asked questions to those who I aspired to be or who had jobs or clients that I wanted to work for. I can’t tell you how many Instagram DMs I’ve sent to video editors, cinematographers, photographers, etc., asking what camera they used, what editing program they used, or how they landed this job. You never know unless you ask or how my mom likes to put it, “it’s not always what you know, but who you know.”
