Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Henderson.
Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us how you got started?
I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. When I was a young child, I would get an image in my mind, and I couldn’t move on with my day until I put it onto paper! I can’t say much has changed in that regard over the last 20+ years. Drawing is how I connect with the world around me; if I’m not creating consistently, I feel like I’m missing part of myself. Art has always led me back to who I am whenever I have felt lost in life. Drawing helps me look forward and keeps my mind open. What I create is often a window into my world, and I love getting to share that with people!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
Sometimes I get stuck comparing my art to other artists’ work. I feel I will never be good enough to do this or that because my art doesn’t look like theirs. I have learned that an artist should never compare their work like that! We should work every day to create what we want to see created. It’s our job to create, not to judge ourselves. The world wants to see what we have to say.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I draw mostly with my Samsung tablet! I specialize in weird and trippy art using lots of color and patterns, always giving the eye something interesting to look at! I use Clip Studio, a great user-friendly program I would recommend. I’m most proud of the growth I have made as an artist. I don’t put myself in a box and do my best to create daily!
What sets me apart from others is that I am me! No one else can create what I can create. I have a story that is unique to anyone else’s because no one sees the world as I do.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love Kansas City. My favorite part of our city is the art that is all around! I love the creative spirit and community of Kansas City. What I like least is how far away all my favorite spots are!
