Rising Stars: Meet Brandon Scott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Scott.

Hi Brandon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Indiana and was always drawing as a kid. I was first introduced to design when I first took a digital design class in High school. I moved 10 hours to Kansas, where I attended KU and began honing my craft for graphic design. I took typography, bookbinding, motion design, and many other enjoyable classes. In my junior year, I took a motion design course and developed a passion for making graphics come to life and move. Aside from taking two motion design courses, I am self-taught as an animator and motion designer. I started interning at Liquid 9 studios over the summer before my senior year. I got hired part-time during my last semester of college, with a full-time position guaranteed once I graduated.

After graduation, I moved from Lawrence to the Kansas City area. I currently work as a graphic designer, illustrator, and motion designer at Liquid 9/Faction. I also freelance on the side and have worked with companies such as This cover; Gigabit live, Halo Top, Growthbuster, & many other amazing companies.

When I am not animating and designing, You can find me listening to music from my continuously growing record collection, selling records of all kinds from my online shop called “Half/full records,” hiking, and attending concerts around town.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel blessed that I knew what I wanted to do early on and have always had a huge passion for visual arts. However, There have been some hurdles along the way. I did not make it through my sophomore review and was cut from the design program. I ended up taking a semester off and taking freelancing jobs anywhere I could find them without charging anything for my work to prove to myself that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. By the next semester, I was given a chance to go back into the program, and though it was a difficult time, it was essential in helping me grow creatively and affirm that this was the career path I wanted to follow.

It was also very challenging juggling being a full-time college student while working two jobs and occasionally freelancing throughout my time at the University of Kansas. But I have always been good with time management, so I could push through and always get what I needed to be done (though sleep became a luxury). But through it all, I have learned that being consistent and having a forward-thinking perspective have allowed me to achieve far beyond what I could have imagined. I am highly thankful for the incredible opportunities and connections I have developed over the years.

Working from home at the beginning of COVID had its challenges. Not being near my co-workers in a close-knit team environment was a big change, while I also felt like I had never left my house. Though I now prefer working from home, it allows me to work much more efficiently. Other things outside of design like selling records and hiking have helped keep a work/life balance.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love design because it allows me to help others, impact my community, and get involved in the art and music community. I love problem-solving, so I am constantly looking for new ways to challenge myself when generating creative solutions. I tend to be a funny person by default, so I always find ways to incorporate humor and satire into my work.

I love to do character animation and frame-by-frame animation. I love using texture and gradients in my work to create a polished and elevated style while still having an organic quality. I wear multiple hats and often find myself jumping into various roles, which has allowed me to work on a wide variety of projects requiring a range of skills. I do a wide range of different types of work, such as commercials, explainer videos, band merch, manifestos, social content, & brand identities, to name a few. Every week is new, so it keeps me on my toes.

I have always been heavily inspired by album artwork. Music has always been a constant in my life, and a few years ago, I got hired to illustrate and animate an augmented reality cover of the band “Boston” iconic self-titled album. My animation can be seen by downloading the “Aria” app and hovering over a copy of the Boston album. Give it a try and watch it come to life!

I have also designed merch for bands such as My Chemical Romance, The Band Camino, Run the Jewels, Social Distortion, & Korn. I have also worked for a wide range of companies such as KOA, Quicktrip, H&R Block, and John Deere. It was rewarding to win awards at the ADDY’s alongside my Liquid 9 team. Seeing Liquid 9’s work alongside other agencies in the KCMO area was fantastic.

What was you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a very angsty kid who was constantly drawing and listening to edgy music. I would spend hours sitting outside drawing anything and everything. I ran cross country and track throughout middle school and high school. I spent most of my summers going to concerts with friends. While also running through cornfields and wooded trails out in the backroads of Indiana. I have always been very independent and detail-oriented. I always enjoyed working on projects in school but was arguably the world’s worst test taker. So out of necessity, I began to find myself excelling in creative problem solving scenarios and bringing ideas to life visually.
