Check Out Cameron Derby’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Derby.

Cameron, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m an artist and photographer from Akron, OH, but reside in the Chicago, IL area.

Since I could pick up a crayon, I’ve always loved art, but I really began to find my artistic style while I was in college where I got a Bachelor’s in Photography from Columbia College Chicago.

My passion and focus in my artwork and photography is portraiture, whether it be people, pets, or characters. My photography includes documentary work, and I also love using mixed media, combining my artwork and photography.

After graduating, I continued to create, explore new mediums, and teach. I’ve been teaching drawing and mixed media classes for kids and teens since 2017. Through teaching, I love helping students discover themselves as artists.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been easy, but I don’t expect or assume it would be. I’ve come to learn that the struggles are a big part of the journey and only make the successes that much more significant.

My goal lately has been to push myself more as an artist and entrepreneur and narrow it down to the start. One thing at a time.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My fine artwork is mainly with graphite and colored pencil.

I also combine mediums such as construction paper or newspaper into my work. I enjoy portraiture and working with color and patterns. Most of my inspiration comes from different cultures and people. My photography work is mainly portraiture as well, along with documentaries.

One documentary that I’m proud of is called ‘Finale’ which documents my twin sister’s final performing days and her thoughts, as a professional ballerina with the Los Angeles Ballet. This series is available to view on my website cameronderby.com.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory would be playing in my backyard with my sister and brother, especially in the fall because we had a lot of trees in our yard.
