Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Freed.
Hi Megan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I’ve always loved cooking and baking and grew up making a favorite family sugar cookie recipe but never really knew how to decorate them. I instantly became obsessed and kept practicing until I couldn’t eat more cookies and had to start selling them! For fun, my sister and I took my mom to a cookie decorating class for her birthday.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve had to accept that my first try at new decorations won’t always be perfect and that I can’t compare myself to other cookie decorators that have been doing this for years. There has also been a learning curve with figuring out how to balance a full-time teaching job, making cookie orders, and still have free time. Being self-taught doesn’t make for a smooth road.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
When I was a kid, I had two dream jobs: being a teacher and being a baker. It took me a little while to figure out the baking, so I went to teach first! I’ve been a teacher for 8 years in 3rd and 4th grade. I love my job and the relationships I get to build with my students and colleagues. It’s a demanding job, but my students make it worth it. I have my Masters’s Degree in Curriculum Leadership and aim to become an instructional coach someday.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I always said I wanted to be a baker when I was a kid. I have a lot of solid memories of baking and cooking in the kitchen- especially at Christmas and holidays!
