Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Schuepbach.
Hi Kelsey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to today?
I have always been creative and have had a passion for music, hair, and makeup. I expressed that creativity through music and unknowingly hair from a very young age. I have fond memories of sitting on the couch while my dad sat on the floor desperately trying to stick bows, clips, and hair ties in his short hair. And one of my favorite memories of my late Uncle is dressing him and my dad up in hats, bows, and fake earrings. My love for hair expanded to experimenting with my hair in a salon and myself. I found myself doing hair and makeup for friends for school dances and occasionally doing cuts. I honestly had my eyes set on making music and never thought of hair as a career.
I remember one day sitting in my Stylists chair just chatting about life. I had left Highschool early to enroll in college. At the time, I was taking some prerequisites and Music classes. We talked, and I expressed that I was losing my passion for music and didn’t think I wanted to pursue it as a career but felt lost. It was as simple as my stylist at the time simply asking if I had ever thought about going to cosmetology school. I decided “why not” and didn’t realize it was a calling. After 11 years of doing hair and 2 salons, I now am in a suite and own my own business. My passion was ignited when I started working for myself. I felt it, and my clients saw it. I truly love what I do, love continuing to learn and better my skills, and am so blessed to be able to make a career out of it. My favorite part is when I am finished styling my client’s hair, and I turn them around to look in the mirror and watch their face. Hair can be life-changing and can make someone feel so good about themselves. It can be our best feature. And that is the part that I love. There have been tears of joy and sadness in my chair, the good, the bad. I was being a part of each of my clients’ lives, finding that connection, and being an unlicensed therapist. And in the end, making them feel beautiful, unique, cared for, and essential is why I fell in love with this career.
Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are things I feel like I would want to change or, time-wise, things I would’ve done earlier, perhaps. But I feel like changing any of those or smooth sailing wouldn’t have to lead me to what I have gotten to do, experience, or where I am now.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a hairstylist specializing in Blondes, Live in Color, and hand-tied extensions. I am a color enthusiast, and I am most proud of how I have developed as a colorist.
I strive to be welcoming, inclusive, and caring.
I am excited to be embarking on a new adventure that has always been a goal for me. I am opening a salon in August. Never give up on your dreams, and surround yourself with people in your life who encourage and push you to achieve big things.
What has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
EDUCATION. You learn the basics in school, which is excellent to pass boards and start. Continuing education is where you form techniques and learn tools to equip you better. Going to classes also makes you more excited and passionate about what you are doing; it’s so important that we fill our cups up, and having educators that you believe in and want to learn from is so important. I also think it is so important not to become content or stagnate in where you are at, and I still have so much learning to do 11 years later.
