Today we’d like to introduce you to Emylee Williams.
Hi Emylee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
What started as a business friendship in a Facebook community swiftly grew into a creative partnership that has evolved a lot over the years.
We both came together in 2015 with our 1:1 creative service-based businesses and decide to open a joint marketing boutique offering branding and photography services for small businesses in the Kansas City area. While we were working with amazing brands in that space we were (accidentally) building a massive brand presence in the online education space for creative entrepreneurs.
We’re both educators at heart so we were naturally turning around and teaching everything we knew as we were growing our service-based business to the multiple 6-figures marks. We decided to walk away from 1:1 clients in 2016 and by 2017 had released a variety of courses, and blogs and started our top-ranking podcast, The Strategy Hour.
After helping over 10k small business owners simplify their systems with one of our programs we decided to open the door again to clients in 2021. We now work side-by-side with freelancers, designers, copywriters, marketing experts, team builders, bookkeepers, and more to refine their services and systems so they can soar past 6-figures with ease.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are moments when this feels like a pinch-us moment and we can’t believe we get to do this for a living… quickly followed by what the heck is going on panic.
There have definitely been high highs and low lows, but throughout it all, we’ve relied on our desire to carve out something incredible for ourselves and other business owners to keep us going. Like most business owners we got into this for what we love, not knowing exactly how to run the business side.
Like what does it mean to be a CEO or CFO? How do you analyze a marketing budget and make decisions about when to hire? How do you actually grow a team and lead them in a way that is fun and productive? Every phase of our business has taught us so much about how *we* want to actually run a business.
In a lot of ways there isn’t a clear roadmap to follow so we’re having to make the rules up as we go.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At Boss Project, we’re a hybrid of an education company (through resources like our blogs, courses, social channels, and podcast) and a service company (through our program, The Incubator).
Our mission is to help more women and femmes create a business that not only fulfills them financially but soulfully. At our core, we are building a business (and helping our clients build their own businesses) with the lens of Life-First.
This means intentionally building a business that supports us through everything that life has to offer (the good and the bad). It means truly understanding what you love *outside* of work and how to prioritize those things *while* growing your business.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
This industry changes all the time so we’re definitely anticipating a lot of shifting in 5-10 years.
However, with our experience over the last decade of being small business owners, there are foundational pieces that stay the same. So it’s up to us and our company to decide what our non-negotiables are when it comes to how we want to run our business, market, and sell.
The shift that’s been unfolding recently is a strong desire for less to be more. Less clients, more income. Less marketing, more results.
