Hidden Gems: Meet Caroline Osborn of KC Farm Doodles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Osborn.

Hi Caroline, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Ever since I can remember, I have been a huge animal lover. My earliest childhood memory is cuddling with our family cat Rachel on the living room couch.

Growing up, people would see my love and passion for animals and tell me I should be a veterinarian, but that never interested me. My childhood bookshelf was packed with animal encyclopedias – from breeds to colorings to behavior types. I collected them all. As I got older, whenever I learned of any volunteer or job opportunity that involved animals, I was there.

Fast forward to the year 2019. My sister sent me a Pinterest picture of a Bernedoodle puppy, and I instantly fell in love. I needed to know more about this breed and spent countless hours researching everything about it – from its colorings and temperament to the Bernedoodle’s high intelligence and better overall health than its Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle parents.

To top it all off, most are low to non-shedding and make excellent therapy companions. I was hooked!

For several years, I had dreamed of having a career where I could work from home and still have quality time with my kids. I am a stay-at-home mother of four, and my family lives in the countryside near the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Our mini farm provides lots of space for all of our animals to roam and play. One night during dinner, I jokingly, but halfway seriously, commented to my husband about how cool it would be to breed Bernedoodles. And to my surprise, he actually agreed.

We bought two Bernedoodle breeding dogs at the end of 2019 after much planning, preparation, and consulting with a couple of quality, responsible breeders. The Bernedoodle’s incredible temperament and intelligence far exceeded all of our expectations. Our first litter of puppies was born in the spring of 2021.

It was a huge success, and the rest is history. We follow the Empowered Breeder program and implement all puppy culture protocols to ensure the best success for each puppy. The new friendships we have experienced with the awesome families that take our puppies home throughout the U.S. have been amazing!

I truly feel I have finally found my niche, and it has brought so much joy to our lives.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have most definitely been challenges along the way.

For example, it was very difficult to find a quality breeder that was willing to sell breeding rights to a new breeder (me). Once you have an “in,” it is much less difficult to work with fellow breeders.

Also, there is a ton of genetic details that go into breeding doodles especially. That has been a huge learning curve. Finding a breeder mentor is key to success!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a Bernedoodle and Aussie Mountain Doodle dog breeder. Providing healthy, quality dogs is our top priority. Each of our parent dogs is genetically health tested through Embark and must be clear of all genetic diseases as well as temperament testing in order to enter our breeding program.

We are a small-scale breeder to ensure the health and quality of our dogs. One thing that makes us unique as a breeder is that we follow a very strict puppy curriculum through the Empowered Breeder program, ensuring each puppy’s success in their forever homes. Also, 10% of our proceeds is donated to Operation Underground Railroad to help the fight to end child trafficking.

Weekly pictures and video updates are sent out to the families on our waitlist once each litter is born, so they are always in the loop of things. We are active on social media platforms, especially Instagram as well. We also offer flight nanny services to anywhere in the US.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
