Conversations with Connor Sandheinrich

Today we’d like to introduce you to Connor Sandheinrich.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Connor Sandheinrich.

Hi Connor, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in the small town of Waterloo, Illinois. We were too far from a mall, and too young to drive so most days you would find us at the local movie theater. Those many hours spent hopping from one theater to the next began my love for film.

Fast forward several years and I graduated from The University of Kansas with a BA in Film and Media Production. During my time there I wrote and directed two award-winning short films and worked on my skills as a wannabe producer.

Since graduating in 2020 I now work as a freelance Production Coordinator in and around Kansas City, MO! I work mostly in commercial production but in my spare time, I try to produce as many short films as I can!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Is any part of life considered a smooth road? Kidding not kidding…

The last half of my college career and the first half of my professional career took place during the pandemic no need to say more!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
If you could pare me down, my two biggest interests would be women and horror movies. Watching the Kansas City native Jill Gevargizian (dir of The Stylist) solidify a name for herself in the vast world of horror was a huge inspiration to my career. I’m always advocating for more women in film and television! This lends a hand to my most proud achievements, my short films!

My first, “Uninvited” was a pandemic project! We decided that since we were already quarantining together, we might as well make something. The short went on to receive several awards at the KU FMS Tensies ceremony and made its rounds in festivals – showing at the KC Underground Film Fest and the FlickFair Fest in 2021.

“Unsafe Spaces” was my next short film. After a conversation with a male friend about why women go to restrooms together and why we don’t go on runs at night, I wanted to portray the dangers of a simple situation to groups of people who don’t inherently have to worry about them. “Unsafe Spaces” won Arrow’s Stylist Short Cuts Competition for Best Film and Best Editing (by Nathan Shapiro). You can now stream Unsafe Spaces on Arrow’s streaming service.

As I was graduating, the production industry was almost completely shut down. I wasn’t sure I would ever get to work in the field I was majoring in and that was a tough pill to swallow.

Now I get to work under and alongside some of the biggest names in Kansas City. Celebrities and artists alike, I am learning from the best. Every day, I get to work on producing some really great creative content and I couldn’t be more thankful.

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank the friends, mentors, cast, and crew who helped me get to where I am today!

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Getting to do the thing I love EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

From the moment I get to the studio I get to problem solve, be creative, share my ideas, and put all of my efforts into making something really cool for so many people to see. Nothing makes me happier than working with my head and hands to create whatever the job requires.

Connecting with people is a requirement. Building relationships (and sometimes sets) is something I took for granted and now that we are back to full-scale productions I want to be a part of it all!
