Today we’d like to introduce you to Tarmine Guichette.
Hi Tarmine, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Like a lot of artists, I have always been creative from a young age. I remember observing everything around me and always having such strong feelings about the way I saw light and color. I went through phases of wanting to be every kind of artist but ultimately found my creative voice in photography and painting.
The first camera I ever used was this ancient Nikon and I would run around with classmates taking their portraits and documenting the landscape around me. When the camera was not available to me, I used my iPad to continue taking photos. I laugh about it now but just being able to take a photo felt so powerful. Being able to take photos and finally show the people around me how I saw the world was such a good feeling. When I wasn’t able to use words to describe what I saw or felt, I could put it in a picture.
I was always drawing and painting as well but I really fell in love with painting at the end of my sophomore year in college. I took my first oil painting class and found a new way to be expressive with light color. My painting style now is definitely more abstract and includes some collage but it’s still focused on reflection and storytelling. I’m currently in the process of creating work for a show I’m hoping to have in KC this fall!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One thing that has been a challenge is trying to stick to a “style”. It’s easy to consume a lot of media and find inspiration in a lot of places. Behance, Instagram, Pinterest, and TV can be overwhelming and lead to comparison.
There are so many exciting ways to create and I want to be able to try them all! When I get overwhelmed with too many ideas or I feel like my ideas aren’t authentic, I go back to pen and paper and write about what things I really love about creating and focus on those things when jumping into a project.
Overall I appreciate the way being an artist allows me to grow in other areas of my life and I love that I’m able to create daily.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a wedding and portrait photographer as well as a painter. I think my love for black and white photography sets me apart a bit! In my work now I get really excited about storytelling and honest portraiture.
It’s really fun to get to know someone and reflect on who they are in beautiful photos. I’m proud of my ability to pull elements from both mediums and include them in my work.
What were you like growing up?
I was probably a lot more extroverted than I am now haha but I loved doing crafts, being outdoors and was always excited for the next adventure. I moved around a lot so I got to experience a lot of different things and meet new people.
I’m really thankful I was able to live in a lot of different places because it keeps me excited to continue traveling and getting out of my comfort zone.
