Rising Stars: Meet Josie Shipley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josie Shipley.

Hi Josie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I started my makeup account nearly four years ago the summer before my freshman year of college. I had always loved makeup as a kid and it was a guilty pleasure of mine for a long time. When I started my account I had no clue what I was doing, but after a long 8 months, I finally hit 1k followers.

I posted literally every day for months on end as I loved creating and what I was doing, but I also wanted to grow the account into something sustainable. It wasn’t until I started doing my colorful Squiggle Sunday videos that things just kind of fell into place. Once I started making them, I just couldn’t stop! They are videos for me to decompress and be myself.

I never plan them. I go with the flow and the end result is always so fun to see. Every day, I fall in love again and again with makeup and the creativity it brings out of me. It has brought me so much joy and amazing opportunities.

I just about cried when I first ever received a PR box, and now I’m being interviewed by organizations such as this! I definitely didn’t choose the most orthodox career, but this is the one that fits me the best and I don’t regret it one bit.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but it’s been a blast regardless.

Every day I get to create is a good day in my book. The main struggle for me was originally growth. I didn’t know how to grow my account at all, but I spent hours upon hours researching and testing strategies that now I feel like a bit of an expert! The second main struggle was time.

In college, I didn’t have all the time I wanted to grow my career, and after college, I had a full-time job. Working ten hours shifts doesn’t give you a whole lot of wiggle room to create!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am most known for my colorful “Squiggle Sunday” makeup videos! In general, though, I’m mostly known for my avant-garde makeup content and my personal captions that most people can relate to. I want to be a creative that still keeps in touch with their audience.

I am probably most proud of how much I have grown my accounts and my community. I’ve put so much effort into them over the years and it’s given me a sense of purpose and consistency in my life. No amount of makeup or money could replace that for me.

What makes you happy?
I have learned over the years how to be grateful for the time you have. Happiness for me is when I’m able to create something full of heart. I’m not rushed to do it, so it comes naturally. I’m happy when I am able to make something that evokes emotion from the viewer… even better if the video does really well, too!

Having a sense of community in what I do is really important as well. I don’t want to feel like I’m posting for nothing, and more times than not, my community has kept me going. I like feeling like people depend on me. I like knowing that people look forward to what I do, and while I know that might make me sound full of it, it’s honest.
