Conversations with Katelyn Dotson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelyn Dotson.

Hi Katelyn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
After college, I decided a job with more creativity and freedom was a better fit for me than an office job or more schooling. I went to cosmetology school, apprenticed at a salon for about 6 months, and started taking my own clients.

After about a year on the floor, I was given the opportunity to be the in-salon educator and took additional education courses in New York and Dallas. I taught in the salon for 5 or so years and decided that working behind the chair was a higher priority for me.

At around that time, I changed from commission-based to booth rent and learned a lot about running a business. From the beginning, I’ve been a part of a very supportive team and gotten to experience many aspects of our industry first-hand.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overall, I would say it’s been a pretty smooth road. Obviously, life throws challenges at us, but I feel very fortunate to have been surrounded by incredible salon owners and other stylists that have supported me along the way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In the salon, I have a well-rounded clientele. I enjoy doing everything from men’s and women’s cuts, highlighting, low maintenance color, blonding, waxing, extensions, and makeup. I’m proud of my wide range of ability to give my clients any look they desire. I believe that the connection I have with my clients sets me apart.

While they are obviously in my chair because they need their hair done, they’re also there because we genuinely enjoy each other and they trust that I will do what is best for their hair, look, and lifestyle.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was a very active and outgoing child. I played sports year-round, played piano, and made friends doing all of that. I would always do my friend’s hair and makeup before school dances or events but didn’t take much interest in doing my own on a regular basis.
