Life & Work with Becca Blackburn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca Blackburn.

Hi Becca, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started Becca Blackburn Photography over 8 years ago after dreaming of being a photographer for a long time. Shortly before that, I decided to invest some time in taking photography classes at the Kansas City Art Institute. After completing those classes, I launched my business.

Throughout the first few years of my business, I realized that photographing families is what brought me the most joy, so I focused on that. I love getting to know a family, helping them feel comfortable and at ease while in front of my camera, and capturing the true personalities of their children in a session. Continuing a relationship with the families I photograph is one of my favorite parts of my job.

I love seeing their children grow and change year after year and hearing their family’s stories from the past year. I have had opportunities to capture families celebrating with lots of joy as well as families cherishing every moment they have as a parent walks through cancer treatment — both are such an honor.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve had to learn a lot along the way about how to best meet the needs of my client’s families while balancing my desire to be present to my own family. I started my business just before having kids, and I’ve had to continue learning about this balance as my family has grown. It can be a challenge, but it also helps me relate to the families I get to work with.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in natural light family portrait photography, and while I’ve worked with families of all ages, most of my experience is with young families who want to capture the moments and milestones that fly by so quickly in their kids’ lives. And since I’ve got kids of my own, nothing throws me—I’ve pretty much seen it all!

It’s important for me that my clients feel comfortable during their sessions like they don’t have to perform or act a certain way or be anything other than themselves. Because that’s what I want to capture: Families as they truly are. I want my clients to look at the pictures hanging on their walls and see a beautifully authentic reflection of who they are.

I’m inspired by the beauty of nature, from the beauty of a grassy meadow in the spring to the golden glow of sunlight in the fall and everything in between. Photographing the unique and beautiful love between a family in amazing natural settings is magical to me.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the community feeling of Kansas City, especially when one of our sports teams is doing well. The atmosphere when the Chiefs are headed to the Super Bowl or the Royals are playing in the World Series is the best!
