Rising Stars: Meet Julieta Amezcua

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julieta Amezcua.

Hi Julieta, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started stealing my mom’s film camera and taking it everywhere, I remember it was too heavy for me but I would take it anyways. As I grew older my friends would make fun of me for carrying such a big camera around, I would bring it to dinners, nights out, and friends trips and my mom was always scared that I would lose it or damage it, to this day I still have that camera and it still works!.

That is how it all started.

I was always a good student so the idea of dedicating my life to photography never crossed my mind, to the eyes of my parent’s photography is not a career, so never saw this as an option. I studied hotel management instead and devoted my life to hotels for 5 years. Leaving the hotel industry was the best decision I ever made and never looked back.

I started working with a very popular photographer in Cabo during that time, Amy, she taught me everything I know, she was an open book, and every time we hung out I remember thinking I wanted to be like her. Working from home, at my own hours, with my own schedule, and being my own boss.

I never thought my photography would take me this far.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The hardest part was the beginning of it. Not having enough money to afford a good camera, lenses, batteries, cards, etc.

My husband wasn’t thrilled about the idea of me switching careers, my parents either. Educating myself, subscribing to any and every online course I could take. Taking any photography job I could, to get some money in.

Getting my name out there came by doing things, pushing myself, and never giving up.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
After experimenting with all types of photography I decided to shoot weddings only.

It gives me great joy seeing my work published, it is also an amazing feeling winning awards or being on lists of best wedding photographers. Although what gives me real pleasure is my client’s words after receiving the photos. Nothing brings me to tears more easily than reading what they have to say.

To me, connecting with the couple at this level where they can be real, forget about the camera and show their love to each other and allow me to photograph these intimate moments, is priceless. That is what moves me.

I’ve heard from clients, that they think my photography is real, that I can incorporate beautiful surroundings with the perfect light with them in it, and I think that is what sets me apart.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My sister went thru a whole film roll and took 36 photos of when Pope John Paul II visited Mexico in 1993. She was so moved by it, she couldn’t stop herself from capturing that moment, she was 4 years old, my mom was so mad at her.

I saw it happening, I went to develop those photos with my mom and we just couldn’t understand why she would do that. Looking back, it all makes sense, my shutter bursts when I see something beautiful!
