Meet Leilah Hurst

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leilah Hurst.

Hi Leilah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My interest in photography started when I was about 11 years old when my dad gave me an old film camera for Christmas. It’s not something I thought would turn into my passion or career. In 2012, I applied for a studio photographer job and they hired me!

That job was the turning point for me. I started to discover my style and absolute love for photography. After that, I had the pleasure to work with incredibly talented photographers who mentored me and ultimately led me to want to have my own photography business.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My path has definitely not been smooth or easy. Photography is incredibly competitive, especially in a big city. For a long time, I was working for other companies and photographers, with non-compete contracts, so I wasn’t really able to put my name out there and I couldn’t use any of the work I had been doing.

I also really struggled, and still do at times, with confidence. I’d see so many amazing photographers who seemed to be doing well with their work and I’d get down on myself. I would have stents where I wouldn’t put any workout or even touch my camera.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in portrait photography and I’d say I’m most known for my lighting techniques. I’m drawn to the dynamic, emotional, and more dramatic lighting styles, so that’s where I believe I shine the most. I like to create moments my clients will never forget.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Life is unpredictable. Don’t wait to be with the ones you love and don’t waste time not doing what you are passionate about.
