Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendall Herman.
Hi Kendall, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story starts a long time ago. I received my first camera when I was 10 years old. I loved that little camera and took it everywhere with me (this was unlike present time, with cell phone cameras everywhere!) People were always the subject of my photos.
In college, I took several photography classes and fell deeper in love with Photography. I learned the art of composition, Portrait, Artistic, and Landscape Photography, as well as the technical side of photography with developing film in the Darkroom. With each assignment, I usually found a way to incorporate people into my work. I took a 12-year detour with a career in Business Sales. During these years, photography was put to the side.
When my children were very little, I hired several photographers and really admired Natural Light photography. In 2008, I purchased my first DSLR Camera. Digital Photography presented a new approach to photography – I had to learn how to use my camera (not easy at first) and then learn the Editing software.
I’m not a technical person so there were many hours of watching tutorials and practicing. I started taking pictures of my children and the neighbor kids. With help from my friends and neighbors, my little business took off.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Hmmm, has it been a smooth road? In general, yes.
I am a very small business and I want to stay a small business, so my expectations are different than a lot of businesses. I have been in business for over 12 years. The first years were more difficult because there were many learning curves and I made my young family my priority.
An ongoing challenge for me is scheduling. My work is very seasonal, with August through December being busy months. Families are very busy and finding a time for family photos is difficult. I have learned to be flexible and I try to work around their schedules.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At this time in history, Photography is front and center of our culture – We are a visual society. I am very proud that my photos contribute to this beautiful side of life.
I specialize in Portrait Photography – Children, Families, High School Seniors, and Corporate Headshots. I like to be around people and learn about their stories. Each session is special to me because it will become a part of each family’s legacy.
My “Mini Sessions” set me apart from other photographers. I have learned that many families do not have a lot of extra time for an hour-long photo session, I can get a good mix of posed, lifestyle (candid), and individual images in a very short time.
Many of my clients have told me they come back each year because my sessions are “fun, quick and easy,” and their photos are beautiful.
My style is classic with the use of natural light. I do not use props or trendy editing.
