Meet Triss Stylez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Triss Stylez.

Hi Triss, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started braiding hair as a hobby when I was 14 years old. That was back in 1991. I was just braiding hair for my classmates and my friends in my drill team. I had a “thing”, and I had no idea then how far it would take me.

In the past 30 years, the art of hair braiding has soared into so many amazing and creative things. In the past two years, I’ve scaled back on all of the newer techniques to focus on what I’ve found to be my niche. That’s Faux Locs.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Unfortunately, my journey hasn’t been an easy one. However, I’ve managed to stick it out because I have a true passion for what I do. One of the biggest struggles I faced along the way was my education. I attended several cosmetology schools. I never completed any of them. I had two children at home. Being in school 8 hrs a day 5 days a week wasn’t putting food on the table.

So, I became a School Bus Driver, and I braided hair in my spare time. I didn’t have a very strong support system back then so it was pretty rough. I also didn’t have social media as a platform either. All of my work came from word-of-mouth referrals. Imagine that. You had to really be good in order to gain clientele back then. I wouldn’t necessarily call that a challenge. It was more of a motivating force.

As you know, we’re big fans of Triss Stylez “The Braider” LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a Registered Hair Braider for the state of Missouri. I specialize in a wide variety of hair braiding techniques however, I’ve narrowed down the margin over the last year to my niche which is Faux Locs. I found that specializing in a particular service helps to keep consistency.

I tend to do things a bit differently. I’m always looking and studying different ways to set myself apart.

Any big plans?
It’s been 30 years this year and I’ve had a long run. I believe I’ve made my mark the best way I’ve known how. I’m looking to retire from behind the chair in 2022. It’s time to pass down my knowledge to the next generation. I am so excited for the next chapter. I have so many plans and ideas that I am ready to execute.

My mission will be to provide all of the knowledge I’ve gained over the years into educating those with a passion and a desire to produce amazing work.
