Meet Jacob Walters of JAW Bats

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Walters.

Hi Jacob, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I was 14 or 15, I started to fall in love with woodworking. My grandpa and my dad both were/are great woodworkers. I also love sports. My main sport was baseball. I figured I would try to make a wood baseball bat. I became obsessed with making wood bats. I made my first one at 15 years old, and never looked back. They weren’t great, but I was self-aware and wanted to perfect my new craft. I, fortunately, had teammates that would buy them from me.

I then went off to play college baseball at Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Kansas. A few business-minded teammates helped wrap my mind around starting my business. I named it JAW Bats using my initials. I then used social media to start growing my brand, and before I knew it I had come to a crossroads after my two years in college. I had to decide to either keep playing and stop my business or stop playing and charge full force into my career. I did not like school, so I decided to run my business full time, and it was the best decision I could have ever made.

Today, I operate out of a 4,000 square foot shop in Baldwin City, Kansas. I have created one of the most respected products in the market, and am currently in the middle of an expansion deal to help JAW Bats grow to what I envision it becoming. My goals now are to create a team in the shop as well as a sales force to help me continue to grow.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not! The biggest struggle I have had over the years is letting go of some of the tasks in manufacturing, and also the business side. You can not be successful without a team. I am a big believer in a quote I once heard…”if you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room.”

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At JAW Bats, we manufacture extremely high-quality custom wood baseball bats. Our intentions are to educate and supply players of all ages with a bat that they can have success with. My specialty is creating bat models for the individual player that fits their swing. That has kind of become what we are known for.

We have the most custom products on the market, and they feel and perform extremely well. That is what I am most proud of with JAW. There are no shortcuts taken, and we truly care about each player that swings our product.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the community feels about Kansas City and all the neighboring counties that make up Kansas. The midwest is a special place full of great selfless people. We are all hard-working genuine people.
