Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenise Miller.
Hi Jenise, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
The idea of me starting my own business originated when I was in beauty school. I wanted to make my own products for all skin types that were cost-effective. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the training needed from school on how to even go about starting a business, so once I graduated, I was basically left with a blank slate and a dream. I hit the ground running looking for jobs and tried to get my foot in the door somewhere to gain experience but between the limited need of an esthetician at that time, I wasn’t getting any offers. Once my license came in the mail and I still didn’t have a job, I told myself, “If no one will hire me, I’ll hire myself!” I registered my business with my state and started The Skin Inn LLC. I didn’t have any money nor a clue as to what I was doing then, but I knew that my passion and persistence was going to get me far. I centered my focus for my business on education. Educating myself as well as others on skin conditions, maintaining healthy skin, and managing problematic skin whether it’s aging or acne-prone. Today, I have been in business for almost two years and I’ve made steady progress even with having to close and reopen during the pandemic.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I opened in March 2019, it was only three weeks later when I had to shut down due to the pandemic. That really crushed me because I had just gained the confidence to start a business in the first place. Post-closing, I went at least 2 to 3 additional months after opening back up before I seen any clients. I ended up finding a job during that time to supplement my income. I thought about closing for good and just working a few times, but I knew I would be right back in the entrepreneur seat. I stayed encouraged by trying to drown those thoughts with positive pep talks that I still do to date. What got me through those hard times the most were my kids. They motivate me every day to push harder to succeed at what I do. I want them to learn from this and be able to break through barriers on their own when they get older.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I started the Skin Inn with the inspiration of developing healthy regimens for all skin types that will make progressive changes. I wanted to inspire others to learn and appreciate their natural skin as I had to do myself. Growing up with teenage acne, I wasn’t able to find my way to healthy skin until my mid-twenties. I was very insecure about my acne to the point I tried to use makeup to cover it up, which made it worse. I want my clients to not just know how to take care of their skin, but to enjoy it and bask in the results everyday! Other than my children, I think that’s what I’m most proud of. I get to watch my client’s skin change over time and with consistency and continuing education, we are making the changes to inspire true confidence in their skin overall. Even my wax clients are happier with their skins appearance compared to other hair removal methods used in the past. No matter what the service is, I make it my mission to give each client some knowledge that will help them see the results they are looking for.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5 – 10 years, I will go from a treatment room to a full-service spa! I have a few things that I am working on adding to my menu within the next few years that will warrant more space from the treatment room I have now. One of those services being body sculpting! I have a little experience working in the field and I think it goes well with my theme.
