Today we’d like to introduce you to Maribel Cerros Loya.
Hi Maribel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started with my own hair journey, in my teenage years the only place I was able to get my hair done was in Mexico or California because they specialized in lightning dark hair. That was when I wanted to bring that to Kansas City, I graduated Cosmetology school, worked in a commission salon where education was priority. I went to Redken exchange in New York City where I was inspired to bring our industry to KC as something different and unique. Ten years in the industry Revive Hair Company was opened four years ago in 2018. Located in the Crossroads Art District, creating an experience for each guest where we specialize in color. Having amazing clients go through our growing journey has been a blessing, being in the heart of Kansas City offering services that I once looked outside of the city I lived in. Now we are a part of this growing community as a Hispanic Entrepreneur Small Business owner.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Many struggles and frustrations, We have survived a tough year through the pandemic, having to be close for more than two months and social distancing. Not knowing if we were able to reopen or not. Our clients have been amazing and more than ready to get revived. Business is open and thriving we survived a global pandemic.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Revive Hair Company?
It is a Latinx ran business that specializes in showing personality through artwork. We customize each look to our client’s needs making sure our guest priorities are always met. Specializing in blonding and color. We help develop the lifestyle that our guests have envisioned for themselves. We are located in the heart of Kansas City, the crossroads district. Ran by first-generation Mexican women that thrive to empower all women from every ethnicity. Knowing first hand how important self-love and self-care should come first.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe opening any business is a risk, I feel like I took a high risk opening a salon on a street where there is salons half a mile away in every direction. Yet our work speaks for itself and business continues to grow. I risked everything for my dream, I put my personal goals on hold to open this business. I took a risk and never gave up on a dream. I had amazing family and friends supporting my dream. And now Revive is a space where everyone gets to enjoy and gets glam and feels amazing stepping out. My children knew the sacrifices had to be made with me being away from home. Risk were taken and they are now paying off.
