Life & Work with Amy Hersch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Hersch.

Hi Amy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I worked for an interior designer in college as her assistant. I got the job because my mom worked there making drapery and custom bedding. She got me the job. I had to finish school and majored in Interior Design because of that job. I worked in Michigan, Chicago and in Georgia before going back to get my Master’s degree from Savannah College of Art and Design. Then went into teaching at the college level. I love teaching interior design to aspiring students. I have taught at Western Kentucky University full time and now teach at Park University and Johnson County Community College. I have design clients and real estate clients as well. I became a licensed realtor in 2019. Those two professions marry up really well. Along the way, I have won design contests for bathrooms I have designed and added to my professional knowledge base.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Haha! If it was a smooth road, I would not be the person I am now. Challenges along the way are a part of life. How you handle them is the key. You never know what is behind a wall or under a floor until you tear something out. Taking care of the issue at hand in a professional manor and right away is key. Explaining it to your client and setting expectations is important.

As a designer, I would love to be able to control everything for my clients. But I can’t. So not stressing over the stuff I can’t control and taking care of the stuff I can control helps to make jobs go smoother.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love taking a space and giving it a glow up. That space may have worked for people who lived there in the past. But it needs a makeover for the family or people that live there now. Transformation is what I love! The more dramatic the better. I love color, I have added custom glass backsplashes to client’s kitchens, custom wallpaper and created custom glass doors for others. I have specialized in kitchens and bathrooms for most of my design career. I believe I can always find a solution for my client’s challenges.

Any big plans?
I have noticed that I have designed and renovated a few historic homes. I love helping to restore the beauty back to older homes. I love learning about the history of these homes and hope to have more in the future.
