Conversations with Deja Cain

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deja Cain.

Hi Deja, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always enjoyed singing as a little kid. I did talent shows, tried out for American idol, the voice, and did a lot of plays and musicals, Tap, ballet, I played the violin piano. When I was about 16, I bought studio equipment and learned how to record and make my own music with the help of my brother Michael ross. After that in 2019, I went to a professional studio called PowerLine and made my first studio Ep. After that, I did a lot of social media engagement and seeking out people to help network more. I have met a great group of artist and DJs and musicians in California, and Texas, that I have gotten to work with. It is one of the many reasons why I travel there so much and will be relocating to California next summer! There are a lot of stories of how I have gotten to where I am but that pretty much sums it up.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, it has been chaotic at times. There’s a lot of things told and expected that could happen and the plan will totally change or be dropped. For me when I shoot music videos, I always have something happen, so I like to have lots of backup options. I was supposed to shoot my song “ALL DAT” in Japan and had a group of dancers there that were ready, but then covid happened. I had a show planned this year but had problems with the event space and miscommunication on what was needed to proceed, my dancers not being able to be open on that date and just a lot of things go into it, event insurance and security, advertisement, equipment, etc. Even working with producers, you have to have everything written down not just verbal or text. I paid $2,000 for one song I finished almost 4 months ago and it still has not been sent to me. I love what I do but it takes a lot of hard work, hard lessons, and investments but this how you learn the industry.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Aside from my music I work in healthcare. I help staff hospitals and facilities that need nurses for emergency response, crisis deployments, and I also work as a CNA. I pretty much just focus on music and work. I think I am known the most for working so much. The most I hear from people is how I inspire them to grind or they look up to me for pushing myself to keep going, or just curious on how I squeeze everything in. I work 70-100 hours a week, on top of being an independent artist, spending time with family, practicing, traveling, studio time, etc. I think that is what I’m proud of the most with myself. I am very determined and when I want something or want to do something there is no stopping me. I am chasing after my dream and living my dream and that’s all you can do is try. This is not a hobby for me this is a career and I know that this is what I was made for. I daydream and picture me up on a big stage with all the other great artist, and one day it won’t be a dream it will be a reality.

What makes you happy?
Being blessed to be able to do what I love and having such a great support system and family. I get to make music and chase my dream with full support. I love hearing how much me chasing after my singing career inspires other people to give it a shot or go after what they want in life. Nothing else in this world (besides music) makes me more happy than my family being together and being able to experience the big moments and memories with me. I want everyone to feel like they are living a good life and not alone.
