Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Garney.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I fell in love with painting in high school. In college, I majored in business and took painting classes on the side. After college, I trained with a residential homebuilder, eventually, starting my own custom homebuilding company, Garney Custom Homes, Inc. I enjoyed the challenge of designing a home to fit the needs of a particular site and family. But I never stopped painting, and when I was able to, in June 1999, I pursued painting full-time. I love to paint on-site and I combine this with my love of travel. I like painting on-site because of the personal connection to the setting and environment. In the spring of 2018, I remodeled a space in the Crossroads Art District where I have a studio/gallery/home which is open to the public on some First Fridays. With friends and family here, Kansas City has always been my home.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Once I decided to pursue painting as a career, I’ve never wavered from this dream. Though in the early years, I did have to rely on my savings and the occasional part-time job to get by. There was a learning curve involved in understanding the business side of marketing and selling art. In 2008, I was asked to teach Painting in the continuing education department at the Kansas City Art Institute. I also taught a class on Marketing your Artwork.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Most of my paintings are painted on-site during various travels. Painting with vibrant and brilliant colors, I have developed a distinctive style. My paintings start with a cadmium red light base instead of a white canvas. Using a paintbrush and ultramarine blue, I do a quick sketch of the scene that serves as a guide for the painting. In the final painting, if you look you can see some of the red background and early drawing lines still visible. I like how the red contrasts and makes all the colors more vibrant. As I paint, I stay pretty close to what I’m seeing and respond to the scene in front of me. As time allows, sometimes I’ll paint for a single day on-site, sometimes several days. Hopefully, my paintings convey my love of travel and the joyful experience of painting on-site in such beautiful places.
