Today we’d like to introduce you to Don Barkley.
Hi Don, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
A few years ago, I helped to care for my father in his last few months before passing. It disturbed me that it was so difficult and cumbersome to get help to seniors in a small town. I decided to get into the insurance field to help seniors get services such as home health care and other services that they needed. That led to offering Medicare options of course.
Very soon I realized that the under-65 health insurance market was grossly underserved as well. Marketplace plans are expensive and restrictive for most people, but that was the only option being served up by the media. I built my business by educating people on ALL of their health insurance options, not just marketplace plans.
By being an independent agent, I’m able to “plug the gaps” which are present in all plans, by contracting with multiple insurance carriers and combining coverages. I offer people options that are affordable and have larger networks than the standard offerings.
As an added touch, which people appreciate very much, I go to my clients and meet them one-on-one, in their home or office, and explain the plans in as much detail as they want.
I help individuals, families, and small businesses. These are typically self-employed people, early retirees, and spouses of people who get coverage from their job. All people who have to pay for their own coverage!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not! I am constantly analyzing plans for protection gaps, the researching solutions for those problems. Every single case is different, and since I customize plans to the individual, I have to know what all those options are!
People love what I do, and consistently refer their friends and family to me for help. Since I travel to meet them at their convenience, I drive about 150 miles per day.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Truly Affordable Health Insurance?
I think I’ve covered most of that in the earlier questions. I meet with people personally. We talk, I ask questions and LISTEN. When people get their insurance through me, they get a local agent – ME. I am their first call if something isn’t working as expected.
I want people to know that they have OPTIONS when it comes to health insurance. I can literally research every type of option available to a client, and present them with the best options. I can also customize plans to fit their budget and lifestyle.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
To be compassionate and remember that everyone is going through something in their life that I know nothing about.
