Today we’d like to introduce you to Kater Tot.
Hi Kater, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I studied theater, dance, and photography at Southeast MO Conservatory. In 2013, I moved to Kansas City. I then began taking clown and burlesque classes here which led me to begin creating my first solo performance act around that time. It quickly took off for me, and I started getting asked to perform at various venues in Kansas City, as well as around the country.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It was a challenge finding myself as a performer for many years. In college, I started off as a dance major. Dance was always my main passion, but certain turns and leaps were a challenge for my body. I’m not as naturally flexible or agile as your standard professional dancer must be. I switched over to majoring in acting, and that didn’t feel quite like the perfect fit either. There was this thing that I couldn’t explain that I knew I loved to do and seemed to have a talent for…. which was what I would have called back then “theatrical dance.” It seemed to be a very specific niche that I did not see represented much in mainstream media. Basically, I knew I had some level of ability at comedy, but I was funniest with movement. For my college internship, I went to NYC and took a month-long physical theater workshop there. Unlike my university, this internship opened my eyes to a whole world of theater that I did not know existed.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a performance artist that specializes in comedic burlesque. I love to be a goof. I love being many different weird, awkward characters on stage and for online content. I’m often inspired by pop culture. I do a lot of “nerdlesque” which is a sub-genre of burlesque that highlights various nerdy fandoms.
I’d say I’m most known for my nerdy character work, physical comedy (I love making ugly faces), and campy dance style.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Putting little shows on for the neighborhood. Using my next-door neighbor’s old tree stump as a stage.
