Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Solomon.
Hi Natalie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi! I’m the artist behind Opia Glow Photo. I’ve been taking pictures since high school – during my senior year I accidentally became the yearbook “teacher” and taught my fellow students how to use a camera and use photoshop.
In my college theatre department, I took everyone’s headshots, but I didn’t REALLY pick up my camera with the intent to make it a career until I got too sick to work a typical 9-5 job back in 2017 (hooray chronic illness!). From there I’ve been lucky enough to shoot fashion lines, editorial work, and nontypical couple’s sessions.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I live in Utah, which is one of the most saturated places for photographers (if you know, you know). At first, it was hard because I was constantly playing the comparison game, but I’ve since learned that there’s room for everyone! My focus, editing style, and even personal energy during a shoot make me stand out in a way that is wholly Opia Glow.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a fashion and couple’s photographer, known for my “creamy and dreamy” editing style – this year I’ve started offering styled shoots using entirely thrifted pieces! My photoshoot closet has over 90 dresses, 6 crowns, a homemade Marie Antoinette inspired plant “wig” (that cost me around $15 of thrifted materials to make), and 15 different backdrops. I’m so proud of the magic my clients and I have created, and I’m especially proud of the size inclusivity in my wardrobe closet (xs-5xl).
What matters most to you?
It’s so insanely important to me that people see themselves as the beautifully creative, unique individuals that they are. 90% of my clients are “absolutely not models” (their words, not mine) and yet by the end of our sessions, they feel like they could do anything. Photography is about more than just a pretty picture – it’s about helping others see themselves the way I see them.
