Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Johnson.
Hi Lexi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
When COVID hit and gyms shut down, I was forced to work out from home in my unfinished basement with dumbbells I had purchased off of Facebook Marketplace. I knew I wasn’t alone in this experience, so I started posting my workouts on Instagram and they began picking up traction. I’ve always been passionate about health and wellness but never thought it was something I could pursue full-time, so I was working as a dental hygienist and enjoying sharing one of my passions with my modest following.
More people became interested, so I decided to pull the trigger on making it an official business. Operated entirely out of my unfinished basement and using a private Facebook group as the platform, I started Lexi J Wellness. I was extremely intentional about the name because I wanted to emphasize TOTAL wellness, not just physical aesthetics. In the midst of the pandemic, mental and emotional health needed nurturing just as much as physical and this group offers a place to foster growth in all areas- plus, it became a new way to socialize and meet friends when quarantine kept us home!
Lexi J Wellness began on June 1, 2020, with 52 members and we are now over 850 members. Women are prioritizing their health and experiencing incredible results, both physically and mentally! I made the decision to quit my full-time job as a dental hygienist to focus solely on Lexi J Wellness in April of 2021.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I hold a lot of pride in personally getting to know my members so I can help them to the best of my abilities and this requires a lot of intentional communication, so keeping that quality standard while commuting an hour each way to my full-time job as a dental hygienist was difficult.
Although many members perform the workouts in gyms, they first started as “at-home” workouts during quarantine, so getting women to adopt a different model of exercise regimen than they may have previously been accustomed to was also an obstacle, however, the group speaks for itself and women continue to rave about the effectiveness of the workouts along with the community environment in the group.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I empower women. I help them to become healthier- physically, mentally & emotionally. I let them know that appreciating the body you’re in and having ambitions to become healthier are not mutually exclusive. I do my best to guide them in developing positive habits to improve their lives and in turn, improve the lives of their loved ones.
As women, we often grow up being told that only one of us can win, so it reinforces a constant need for competition and pushes us away from camaraderie with one another. I am incredibly proud of the community that Lexi J Wellness has cultivated. We have a group of over 850 women that all understand our own individual values will not decrease by empowering the women beside us and that sets us apart both in the health & fitness space and society.
Physical results are fun and eye-catching, but I get a greater sense of pride when a mom tells me her kids want to work out with when a member tells me they were taken off anxiety/depression medications when they say they finally feel comfortable and confident in their skin- I could go on, but THAT, is the good stuff to me. Health and strength will look different on each of us, but it feels great on everyone.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I have a podcast of my own- Lexi J Wellness Podcast, but here are a few others that I really enjoy- The Mindset Mentor, Dhru Purohit’s Broken Brain, Straight up with Trent Shelton, and Armchair Expert. I also am a HUGE developmental book nerd, some of my favorites- “The Slight Edge” by Jeff Olson, “The One Thing” by Gary Keller, and “Grit” by Angela Duckworth.
