Check Out Heather Markway’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Markway.

Hi Heather, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always loved flowers, plants, and nature. Out of high school, I decided to pursue a degree in Horticulture. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Missouri, I moved to Kansas City to begin my career in the landscaping realm. Since 2007, I have worked in various positions of the green industry, from landscape design and sales to customer service and marketing.

In September 2017, I created a blog, Life Garden Style, to share my expertise of plants and flowers, as well as other passions of mine. My career at the time was in the green industry, but I was in a behind-the-scenes role, not working directly in creative flower design or planting. The blog became my creative outlet. During this time, I took on less than a handful of clients who asked me to create seasonal flower displays for their homes and businesses. These types of projects are what I hoped to do as a career full-time.

While the blog and the side projects helped fuel my creative side for a few years, I still felt like something was missing. I felt called to do more and lean into my creative talents. In 2020, I resigned from my full-time job to begin my own business. Life Garden Style, LLC was born and I dove headfirst into entrepreneurship.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest hurdle thus far came right at the launch of my business. Within a week of giving my resignation at my full-time job, COVID entered the Kansas City scene, and lockdown occurred shortly after. I had to get creative with my service offering. My presence on social media, that I’d been building since the launch of my blog, helped tremendously in reaching people to get the word out.

Starting a business this way was definitely a curveball I wasn’t expecting, but I stuck with it!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create premium custom container plantings for residential and commercial clients. Using florals and live plants I provide show-stopping displays for four seasons-spring, summer, fall, and winter. I also share my skills in private and public workshops for creative container planting.

I am passionate about creating beautiful, functional designs that will make my clients smile every time they walk by. Flowers make people happy, and I feel privileged to provide a service that brings joy to people’s lives and curb appeal to homes and businesses.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Follow your passion, it’s you’re calling with which you are to serve others. Even if it feels uncomfortable and uncertain, step out in faith and trust God and your skills to take you where you want to go. Someone out there needs your gifts and talents.
