Meet Alicia Scott of Alicia Scott State Farm Agency

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Scott. 

Hi Alicia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Alicia Scott and I am a State Farm agent in Independence, MO. My team and I build insurance and financial plans that grow with you. My responsibility is to manage people’s risks and help them to make smart decisions with their money. I started in sales as a starving college student where I knocked on people’s doors after my classes offering to paint their home and would then do the painting alongside a group of other college kids in the summers. Once I graduated and realized the student loan bills were going to start coming in, I knew I had to start making money fast. I always liked jobs with commission because I knew the money I made would be a direct result of my effort and skills. So, I started selling cars. And, wow, that taught me so much about what I was capable of and who I wanted to be. After about 5 years in the automobile industry, I discovered that a path in insurance and financial services would best serve my passion for helping others and allow me to be more involved and helpful in my community. 

I’m from a small town in Iowa where everybody knows everybody and relationships are everything. My family has been life-long State Farm customers and to me, the State Farm brand is so much more than insurance. When I was a kid my family’s State Farm agent was also my basketball and softball coach, he was someone that always believed in me and always pushed me to do my best. Sadly, he passed away way too young and it was then that I saw how much he had impacted not just me but our entire community. He was a leader, a friend, a coach, a “good neighbor”. I can only hope that when I leave this earth that I can make that kind of impact. I later realized how special it was that State Farm was able to provide a platform that allowed for him to make that kind of impact on the community he lived in. 

My journey to opening a State Farm Agency was definitely not easy. Many people do not realize that you cannot just purchase a book of business from State Farm. You have to be chosen for it and work very hard for that opportunity. I worked for an Agency in Burlington, IA, spending three years trying to prove that I had what it takes and I was told “no” more than once along the way. But I am so grateful for the “no’s” because they got me to where I am today. Yes, there were days I doubted myself. Yes, I had financial setbacks. But the “nos” helped me to fight for what I wanted and to continue to improve myself as a leader. 

I feel so lucky to now be a part of a brand that embodies the values of community, integrity, trust, and relationship building. Many people think of insurance as just something you have to have. Or they think of financial planning as something only wealthy people do. To me, it’s making sure one bad day doesn’t financially impact the rest of your life. It’s making sure that your family is protected financially if you don’t make it home from work tonight. It’s helping someone buy their first home. It’s helping someone plan to be able to retire comfortably after working hard their entire life. 

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t believe that any business owner could honestly say it’s a smooth road getting to where they are today. But the challenges are what makes the victories so sweet. The biggest obstacle I’ve had to overcome since I became a business owner was realizing that I wouldn’t be able to be successful without the help of others. I had always believed that if I worked hard enough, I could accomplish anything on my own. What I now realize is that I would not be where I am today without my husband listening to me and encouraging me every day, my family always believing that I could achieve anything, my mentors providing guidance and making me a better leader, and my team at the office who believe in our mission to help others. As a business owner, you have to have confidence in both your strengths and weaknesses. You have to have grit to accomplish your goals. You have to be resourceful. You have to find people that share your passion. And you have to be humble enough to ask for help.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I moved to Kansas City in March of 2018 to open my Agency. Some of the best advice I was given during my path to Agency was “choose where you want to live first, and then wait for the opportunity”. We love how Kansas City is a small town and a big city all at the same time. We love the people and the communities that make up this great city. My husband and I live downtown in the river market area and love the farmers’ market, the streetcar, the shows, and the amazing food. We also love hopping on the scooters and touring the town.
