Conversations with Nikita Vonee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikita, a Kansas City native, is a self-taught visual artist, singer and published author that enjoys writing and sharing ethnic art that reflects who she is as a Black woman.

It has been challenging navigating a small business throughout the pandemic while simultaneously balancing family life and a nursing career. I have found very creative ways to do them effectively, including using my other gifts to provide an expressive outlet. Initially in 2019, my art business was only in-studio, however I began offering virtual art parties and paint-to-go kits so that customers could still enjoy the experience in a different way! Additionally, I have been a trained singer throughout my life; and had my first vocal performance with a nationally recognized rap artist in April of this year as a background vocalist. So that was fun! Over the past seven years, I have been a blogger, produced vlogs and I launched a podcast last Spring called #NikNaxx with inspirational nuggets of my life stories. Each of these things were amped up during the pandemic because I finally had the down time to do create. I recently self-published my first book entitled, “Oceans + Heavens” on my birthday in August, which talks about trial and triumph over romantic and platonic relationships. My memoir speaks to empowering women to reclaim their time, peace and self-love after failed relationships. I was intentional to not only share my personal stories in relation to romantic relationships, but also to speak about the plight of being a Black woman that also experiences hardship with friendships and motherhood as well. My long term goal is to invoke conversation about unspoken emotions and healing that will reach people (women specifically) who believe that they are alone in each of those circumstances.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a visual artist that specializes in abstract and fluid art. I own and solely operate Calming Canvas Art Studio in the downtown Grandview area. There I offer in-studio art parties and virtual paint events for people to enjoy a fun and interactive experience with their friends and family. I have always been a creative person, I was classically trained in vocal performance in high school and college and eventually pursued a career in healthcare as a Registered Nurse in 2004 while my children were young. Eventually, I wanted to tap back into my creativity; I began painting in 2017 as a hobby and eventually people started to ask if I would offer paint parties. Shortly after, I started my business as a mobile paint artist traveling to local businesses and residences in the KC metro area. I acquired the brick and mortar the following year; there are lots of paint and sip style businesses in the KC metro, however my business is set apart by offering multiple ethnic art selections and music!

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I am very charismatic and honest when interacting with my customers and I engage with them while enjoying their party with them while I am instructing. I offer top-notch customer service and a 1:1 booking experience. The majority of my customers are referrals, which I attribute to much of my success over the past few years and the fun environment that I provide!
