Meet Malika Collins of SkylaK Kloset

Today we’d like to introduce you to Malika Collins.

Hi Malika, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I always had a passion for fashion growing up. When I was in high school, I took all the fashion classes my school offered. I would try to skip my other classes so I could stay in the fashion class to sew my outfits. As I got older, I decided I wanted a clothing boutique. I was just nervous and didn’t know where would I start my journey. It was then when I faced being shot three times and almost dying to realize life is short and I needed to start my clothing boutique as soon as possible. I knew I wanted to name is after my daughter Skyla. I did research to find clothing vendors by watching youtube videos. From there, I took all the information and created SkylaK Kloset.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have only had my business for a little under a month but I have definitely faced some challenges. When I first launched SkylaK Kloset, I did not get a lot of sales. I would maybe get one or two sales a month. The clothes I purchased for my site were clothes I felt would separate me from other boutiques. But when I started looking on Instagram to see what my target audience was interested in, I added those clothes on my site. That’s when I started getting an abundance of sales. Then Monique reached out to me to help with my social media marketing and that helped raise more awareness to the boutique and helped with sales. But right now, I am at a stop and back to the one or two sales a month. I know I am a fairly new boutique and I still have so much to learn and go through, but I believe if I stay consistent and determine, SkylaK Kloset will be as big as I want it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
SkylaK Kloset is an online clothing boutique. It is where your everyday IT girl makes a statement. I want women to feel comfortable and confident when they wear my brand. I also want women to feel sexy and get luxury vibes. What sets me and my brand apart from other is this is a career for me. SkylaK Kloset isn’t just a clothing boutique to join the wave on Instagram. This is actually something I have always wanted to do and what I want to do for the rest of my life. So I put hard work, dedication, and my all into this business. The thing that I am most proud of when it comes to my brand is that it’s authentic.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t know if luck really plays a huge part in my life and business. I would say having faith plays a major part in both aspects. As long as I keep faith in myself, my business, and God, I can achieve any and everything. Of course, there are bad times but I have to look at it as a learning experience and a form of helping me grow as a person and a businesswoman.
