Community Highlights: Meet Trent Kesterson of Tiki Huna

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trent Kesterson.

Hi Trent, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got started in the industry about 14 years ago in Columbia, MO. I worked my way up from bouncer to bar-back to bartender during my time in Columbia. When I moved to Kansas City eight years ago with my then-girlfriend, now wife, bartending seemed the easiest and the most comfortable way to make a living in a new town, and that is what I fell back into. Over the years, I have had the chance to sling drinks behind all different types of bars in KC and learned new things along the way when given the chance.

I would have to credit the distillery I worked at for igniting my interest in craft cocktails and developing balanced, thought-out drinks. Flash forward to two and a half years ago, I decided to dive down the rabbit hole that was Rum history and Tiki Culture in America. I really fell in love with the escapism and idea of Tiki cocktails; a thought-out, craft Caribbean potion that did not take itself seriously. With my need to have a creative outlet and challenge myself, Tiki fit the bill, and thus Tiki Huna was born.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There is a definite learning curve that goes with running all that is a functioning bar. I think handling the business side of things has been a great learning experience for me, and has really opened my eyes to the challenges that life throws at a new business. It’s not easy, and there are long hours, high stress sometimes, but when you see something you created actually working and thriving, it is a very rewarding experience.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Tiki Huna is a rum-centric safe haven for all that is tiki and a place to hide out while enjoying all of the mysterious, exotic flavors of the tropics. I wanted this bar to be a place to unplug from the bombardment of social media, the stresses of work, and the riggers of responsibility and just enjoy a drink with a friend or alone, escaping to a place 1000 miles away, lost on some secret beach in the Caribbean.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
