Hidden Gems: Meet Joseph Smith of Hammer & Stain DIY Workshop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Smith.

Hi Joseph, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

We believe in Family

We started Hammer & Stain in 2020 with family fun in mind. Coming from a close-knit family of eight, one night that everyone looked forward to was game night. Game nights consisted of family, food, fun, and games. It was a time filled with laughter and jokes that were moments captured in photos. Today we spend time reminiscing about these moments and creating new memories with extended family and friends. What was true then is still true today: family time is our favorite time. Throughout all the joys and challenges that life brings being around family and friends always seems to be right at the core of happiness. I have combined this with my love for construction considering flipping houses in the early 2000s became a passion of mine.

With the addition of wood, stain, paint, music, and a bit of crafting fun you see what we present you with today; Hammer & Stain DIY Workshop! We believe that everything we do at Hammer & Stain DIY Workshop involves us creating an atmosphere of fun and inspiring others to create wall-worthy pieces they love and memories that last a lifetime.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We’ve definitely had our share of struggles along the way. Hammer & Stain opened its doors two weeks prior to COVID-19 and businesses being forced to close. COVID-19 brought its share of challenges: wood price increases of as much as 200% in some cases, paint shortages due to the freeze in Texas, and the overall unknown of the virus.

Although we were able to quickly adjust and created Hammer @ HOME Kits which include everything one would need to complete your entire project at home; the loss of my sister to cancer a week after opening was devastating in addition to my mother (who was a major supporter and a loved worker at Hammer & Stain with me) was diagnosed with cancer in December.

As you know, we’re big fans of Hammer & Stain DIY Workshop. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
