Daily Inspiration: Meet Abby Jeans

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Jeans.

Hi Abby, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always had a fascination with cameras. In my family home videos, I am often asking to hold the camera. One day my dad gifted me his camera, and I never stopped making videos. I took a broadcasting class in high school and single-handedly created my class senior video. From there, I went on to college and studied broadcasting at Park University. While in school, I interned with Channel 19 KCPT. Upon graduating, I landed a job at my dream station, Fox 4. During this time, I would occasionally film weddings for my friends. Being a wedding videographer and photographer wasn’t something I ever thought I would pursue but one day, the idea was put on my heart, and it never left. After a change of ownership at the station I was working at resulted in my position being eliminated, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to take the leap and pursue my own business- and that is what led me to AJ Film & Photo.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say the road to where I am has been extremely rocky, but it hasn’t been smooth by any means. Like anyone who has pursued a dream would say, it requires a lot of work to get there, and a lot of risky financial choices have to be made. I was investing in new camera equipment, backdrops, lighting, etc. It was scary investing in myself when I wasn’t certain what the outcome would be. This caused me to doubt a lot of my choices, and I started to lose confidence. My biggest struggle was overcoming my self-doubt and regaining my confidence.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in videography, primarily weddings. I have a passion to create, and I think my story-telling abilities are what sets me apart from others. Every shot I take, I think about what it will be like when I go to edit it. Instead of just pressing record and letting my camera capture the day, I try to carefully move and shoot certain details and people that will better tell the story.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I have learned along my journey is that perfection is impossible. I put a lot of pressure on myself to be perfect, and since learning that that is unrealistic, my work has improved. Instead of aiming for perfection, I shoot for progression. Each shoot or project I do, I set a goal to be better than the last one. This is what has helped me to grow in my business.
