Check Out Janelle Morgan’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Morgan.

Hi Janelle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up I always knew I didn’t want to sit behind a computer my whole life. I also knew I wanted to help people. I attended Kansas State University 2010-2014 and received my bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with the intent to get into physical therapy. (Go cats!) After shadowing a few places, I just didn’t feel like physical therapy school was the right path for me. Yet, still wanted to be in the health and wellness community. I started working at TITlE Boxing and found my groove in Fitness. Over the next few years, I continued at TITLE Boxing and even got into personal training and some lifestyle and nutrition coaching. During that time I met a lady who did massage and I was blown away at how good she was at massage and bodywork. She was my inspiration for looking into massage school. (Shout out Kelly Bash) I was always the friend giving back massages and head scratches growing up. I feel like I had a natural ability I just needed some coaching and instruction.

I went to Wellspring School of Allied Health for 11 months and started my massage practice once that was done. In January of 2019, I started J Massage Therapy, LLC and am currently located inside Identity Chiropractic in Overland Park. I am also contracted to do massage at the power and light apartment building in downtown KC. I have loved every minute of massage and working for myself. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. In my practice I do a variety of massage styles including relaxation, deep tissue, sports massage, stretching, prenatal, percussion therapy, cupping therapy, etc. I see a wide range of clients from high schools and college athletes, CrossFit, bodybuilders, to 75-year-old guys that love golf. My most recent focus has been assisted stretching…I have recently joined the SportStretch® Network in hopes to work with professional athletes!

I think my background in kinesiology, personal training, and also being an active gym-goer gives me an advantage in working with clients and a better understanding of movement on a deeper level.

Many people struggle with chronic pain and it is rewarding helping them out of pain but also educating them on what may be causing it and paying attention to their body.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a generally smooth road. Starting a business from scratch always takes a little time to get started. Year two I did close down for a few weeks during COVID but since then business has really picked up. I am very thankful for amazing clients and referrals!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
One thing I loved about the idea of getting into massage and bodywork is the endless possibilities with it. There are so many directions and specialties in the massage world I know would be learning new things forever!

I specialize in deep tissue and sports massage/stretching. I think I have a natural talent for it. Most comments after people come to see me are, “that’s the best massage I’ve ever gotten”, “your hands are magical”, “you have amazing hands”, “I didn’t appreciate how good your massage was until I went somewhere else”, “you have a very comforting touch”

My business is more successful than I imagined it could be and I feel like I’m still getting started. (Compared to people who have been doing it for 15+ years)

As I mentioned previously, I think my education and background as well as my natural talent and understanding of the body helps me both relate to and understand what my clients are going through.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
It is a constant learning process and the best way to learn is by getting your hands on people to massage. Everybody is different and very complex. The more you work on people you learn how muscles and tissue response.
